Lots of options for the bolt-ons but the engines are the same and completely interchangeable.

If you're going to go to the trouble of getting a tune, I'd get an LPT engine 95-98 for simplicity. If you want to hassle with modifications the 2.3 RN engines (99+) are probably a better option.
Presumably you're not messing with the exhaust but if you are that factors into the tune.

If you're using an off-the-shelf ECU then pick your ECU first, then get an engine-injectors-turbo that match.
i want to get the 18t but seems that the housing is nowhere to be found. can i use 19t housing with 18t core? im starting to give up and just want to go with factory 16t.

I cut off both mufflers just past the rear driver side subframe and suspension, suspended by metal braided cable.

I would probably get a factory ECU for the 98 v70r if i was able to get the 18t. I have blue injectors, gotta get seal and filter kit for them.

Parts are pricey but have tried these guys? I can't speak for others but when I sued them a few years ago they were very helpful.

FLXC90 wrote: 21 Jul 2020, 21:09 but if you are meaning to put this motor in an 850 (?) then you can upgrade the turbo to 18 or 19, need to match the flange design, straight versus angled. Look at using an ECU tuned for your application. Bigger turbo and injectors, just a flash to the ECU. You can use one from a similar year HPT 850, or maybe a 98 *70 HPT. Depends on your AC control etc. Or perhaps a canned tune like ARD Green or Blue depending on your mods and what is available (Viva, IPD, EBay) What year and motor is the 850 you are looking at?
ARD tuning went out of business over a year ago, maybe even two years now.

All the 2.3 turbo engines 94-98 are the same, don't sweat the numbers at all. For a given year the R designation engine is *exactly* the same as the T5 engine. The turbo is not part of the engine it is a bolt-on accessory. Lots of options for the bolt-ons but the engines are the same and completely interchangeable.

Then choose (and/or rebuild) your turbo, then get the appropriate injectors and tune to match. Presumably you're not messing with the exhaust but if you are that factors into the tune.

Erik knows from experience. He makes valid points. As far as an ARD tune, a "lucky" buyer might find an ECU used, on second-hand market. Especially a budget-constrained builder.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

The housing has to match the compressor wheel. The CHRA is that cast iron middle bit, which houses the bearings and oil/coolant channels. You can reuse that.

I didn't realize ARD was outta business, but their tunes had a mixed reputation. Check this fella out: https://vasttuning.com/ Good reputation for pre-99 cars.

If you're going to actually get a tune, go with Aaron at VAST. If you're not, follow Erik's advice and find an ECU first and then get the turbo/injectors to match.

At this point, I'd just stay with the 16T.

'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.
