The wax I used is from Meguiar's..........note the picture can't be used to judge its effectiveness because the time from application to deluge was only about 30 minutes.....LOL

I do like the look of the White Paint covered in water droplets.

A good white color like yours looks really clean (when it dries off)

It has been 4 years since I started this thread and My Son (the one I bought the S80 for) has decided to move on from Volvo.

He did buy a car made in America at a factory very close to my house in San Jose, and we picked it up at the factory in Fremont.

So this seems like the right time to look back and see if I achieved my $10,000/10 year/100,000 mile goal

The goal can be split into 2 parts

$0.10 / mile for the cost of the vehicle

or

$1,000 / year


What are the actual results

$0.18 / mile

and

$1,325 / year


Summary

If my son had continued to drive the S80 it would have been closer to the goal and if the COVID did not happen it would also have been closer. But the overall cost for this vehicle was very reasonable (with me looking for parts and doing the needed repairs). I don't know if I would recommend a ~10 year old Volvo for someone that only plans to take their car to the dealer for service.

Hopefully this thread has inspired others to get a P3 and to maintain it proactively so that it will last a very long time.


Future Plans for the S80

My niece needed a car so I decided to sell it to her for $4,800 so it will stay in the family for now. But you never know what the future will bring.


I will occasionally update this thread but at this point the Challenge is officially closed.

I really thought I had finished my involvement with the S80 (that I sold to my Niece)

But the Volvo pulled me back in.

So what did I do?

Because I have brand new Iridium TT sparkplugs and brand new Volvo coils on the shelf I changed #2 and #6

Note: my Niece needed the car so I didn't have the luxury of completing a careful diagnosis.

However I was able to collect more data after she had driven the car a few times (about 50 miles).

I installed these Sparkplugs about 3.5 years ago (~25,000 miles). Here are the Plugs that I removed. Looking at the Highlighted area there is no evidence of Corona discharge. Note: I apply Dielectric Grease to the ceramic where it touches the boot from the Ignition Coil. So my Paranoia seems to have been effective.

Here is the final picture of the Sparkplugs (I didn't keep track of which is #2 and which is #6) but looking at the insulator one of the plugs clearly has a WHITE area and the other doesn't. The reason that is is important is because the Voltage applied by the coil is trying to find the ground and it will jump across the gap to get there unless it can fine an easier way. Possible alternate leakage paths are the Corona region I identified in the first picture and the ceramic insulator inside the combustion chamber in this last picture. Looking at this last picture it seems clear why I had a lot of Misfires. Unfortunately the Root Cause is likely due to oil entering the combustion chamber due to a blocked oil control ring. This is a know problem for certain years on the 3.2 where Volvo switched to a THIN oil control ring to get a slight improvement in fuel economy.

What I can tell you is that I have purchased a Hotter Sparkplug to fight the oil fouling.


IKH16TT instead of IKH20TT.
