Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)
Yeah, it looks to be much simpler than it is. That bottom bolt is a real pain. Luckily I was able to get at it with a single 12 inch extension on a 1/4" ratchet.

Hey LOB, I'm surprised the Haynes manual didn't say, you require to use a wrench, take it to your nearest dealer who pays us to give you crap advice so you have to take it the the dealer....!

Hi Scot 850!
Don't know if some information is lost in translation to Swedish but my Haynes manual doesn't go into detail. It just says " remove the 5 bolts of the..." Choosing a wrench for tool was however not rocket science. There are a few other manuals that might be better than Haynes. Though, the knowledge base in this forum outperform any manual!

Drive the 1999 700 miles round trip around New England, and the growling alternator now has marbles in it. Limped back in from ROC last night promising to put the spare in this weekend.
Rebuilt it 20k but my guess is the rebuilder greased old bearings instead of replacing. You're fired

The Haynes manual became utterly obsolete when this very forum was created! After I found Matthews I never opened mine again, because the hands on experience of many is so much more valuable than the writing of one.LOB wrote: ↑09 Nov 2017, 01:31 Hi Scot 850!

I'm in the process of replacing the radiator in the 98' XC and I'm running into a problem. Last night I got down to the last two bolts that hold the thing to the frame when one of those welded nuts came loose. Grrrrr!
I should have noticed before I started to loosen these bolts that they were badly corroded.
Now I soaked them with Pb blaster but maybe I'll try to cut the bolt off with a Dremel tonight, there doesn't seem to be enough space to get a vise grip on.

The radiator is a fun job too. My cousin and I actually knocked it out on his '99 in probably 45 minutes, and it was a pain because my hands were all hacked up from working on my Saab the rest of the week before, and he didn't have any gloves. Plus having to work around the PO's horrible garden hose tranny cooler line rebuild... I wish he would stop being lazy and just replace those lines already. One is leaking at the transmission and he'd rather glob some RTV on it to seal the leak.

I replaced them with SS bolt and nut with washers - when I did the radiator again in 2017 they came right off.

Changed my exhaust system on my 855 to a stainless steel and 2,5 inch from cat.
Made a very nice sound and actually gave it a bit more omphh in the higher revs.

Very nice! Did you get a custom job done or use an aftermarket exhaust?Martin_Frydenbo wrote: ↑09 Nov 2017, 23:43 Changed my exhaust system on my 855 to a stainless steel and 2,5 inch from cat.
