I never had the pads out of it. I’ve moved the assemblies and hung them out of the way doing other stuff. I’ll check out some reference material and take another look. I believe the car has had the clanking since I bought it a month or so ago. I just assumed it was the strut assemblies as they were completely wore out. I replaced the other stuff to refresh the suspension figuring one of those would address the clanking.. Nope.. lol

Complete strut assemblies, stabilizer links, wheel bearings, ball joints, control arms a couple years old. When I had it apart today I noticed my brake pads are a bit loose in the brackets. So I drove out of the neighborhood again, speeding up a little so I can apply the brakes when I hit the set of bumps and damned if the clanking went away. I guess I need new retainer springs unless you all have experienced this before. All other brake parts are tight. Slide pins are greased and tight.
when you touch the brakes the suspension is placed under load, anything that was knocking will tend to go quiet.
I have same problem, i'm going over the end link nuts to make sure i got them tight 3 weeks ago when i did both sides.
if you can't rattle the brake pads with retainer springs installed they probably aren't rattling when driving.
but who knows with volvos.

I can rattle the left front outside pad. The retaining clip is not making full contact when locked into place. The bottom wing doesn’t touch the base bracket. And upon further investigation, the clip is for the rear. If you look on FCP, the front and rear clips are a different shape. I checked out all my springs, the rest are correct. I guess I’m going to the junk yard tomorrow. 😂

Looks like you solved it, mine looks to be end link nuts.

I just put another 1/2 turn on my end link nuts.
they were recently installed with wrench and counterhold allen but but its difficult to get enough force with a wrench.
marked the threaded stud with touch up paint to see if it moved with the nut, it didn't.
When they were first installed the clunking went quiet but 2 weeks later the noise came back.

I didn’t do anything to my P2 today - its 100 degrees, the car is black, and is parked out in the sun.

I ended up swinging by the PNP on the way to my girlfriends house. It took me 10 minutes, popped two clips off and hit the road. Then pigged out on pizza and ice cream…..food coma….

Totally a job for the impact. A bit of force with a jack up on the link and you can zip them right on.

I couldn't get them off with the impact, so i cut em off, figured the impact couldn't put the new ones on either, wrong.

This is what it looks like when someone puts a rear retainer clip on the front. It doesn’t pull the caliper around tight to the bracket and your brake pad moves around making a metallic sound you think is a different front end issue. 😂
