Replaced a CV boot on the 98 V70 - sure is great using an air hammer to pop off the CV! Also new cap and rotor, the car is at 279k miles.

Also pulled the pot metal slide pins from the car's rebuilt front calipers, and replaced them with 205k-mile factory stainless pins, which were basically spotless.

Oof... that sounds miserable. It was ridiculously hot today too, took the time to replace the valve cover on the Miata after repainting. Still doesn’t look as good as I was hoping, but I guess I can’t achieve near perfect results without power coating.

Finally got around to charging the AC in the R today too. That went well... until I was smelling refrigerant through the vents! It was hissing through the vents for at least 2-3 hours after this. I hope it aired out enough, fortunately it doesn’t seem to be lingering.
Looks like I need to order an evaporator! I had a strong feeling that was going to be the problem. Oh well, I need to fix the dash mounts anyway!

Yeah, youwant to pump it down to vacuum to test system integrity first. That way when the vacuum escapes it rushes up into space with its friends, although the relationship can be empty, and non-Torrid.

That's what I had done probably a month ago. It didn't hold vacuum for very long, which is what alerted me to a leak.

Unless I know the system to be good, I ensure it holds vacuum overnight.

Good Sunday all,

Since were on the subject of AC systems. I'm in the middle of replacing my blower motor and resistor. While doing that I decided to shop vac around the evaporator a bit. This is actually the first time I have ever physically looked at the evap and I this vehicle has gone 23 years without a cabin filter. Why didn't volvo make this standard? A shop vac is only able to do so much. The crud I'm pulling off is well adhered to the evap fins. I'm impressed any air was getting through. Pics below to completely disgust your Sunday out.

Holy smokes Zion! That's crazy. How was it working in this condition (no pun intended)?

I have no idea how long its been like this. I took ownership in 2006 and never bothered checking. I was having some fan motor issue where I would get no fan and sometimes I would hit a bump and then full fan power. I didnt know if it was a Fan motor problem or a resistor so I bought a new resistor and the bosch replacement motor at FCP. My fan blades and such were in good condition and changing' the motor was not all that difficult. (Idiot me put it on backwards the first time). I'm estimating about twice the airflow now. I have never had airflow this good and there's no telling how much crud is buried deeper in the evaporator. At some point my compressor or a line will break, I will probably just do a complete system replacement at that time. Until then this was my compromise. Some scrubbing with a stiff nylon brush and forceps to pull as much crusty crap as I could reach. I could not smell an odor before or after. Maybe I acclimated to it long ago.
