Great, I'll do some searching on the coolant sensor testing.

As for the MAF cleaner, Autozone didn't have it, but Napa did. The company is CRC I beleive. I was planning on using electronics cleaner, which leaves no residue, but this cleaner states it is for MAS cleaning. I figure better safe than sorry, since the MAS is very expensive to replace. The procedure is simple, pull out the sensor and spray it down. Let it air dry, then plug it back in. I figure with the amount of oil blowback I had, it wouldnt hurt to clean it. If I get around the it this weekend, I'll clean the sensor and take pictures. There was a great article I found online about cleaning the MAS, and the guy showed pics of his M5. Very detailed pics. If I come across the link, I'll post it up.

Napa has the spray on sale for 4.99 this weekend. Normaly price is 5.xx, so you only save a few cents.

Just to add my story to the books. Short version: '94 855T, very small vacuum leaks at the EGR caused stall when the cooling fan came on, sometimes.

Long version:
When I did my PCV replacement a few weeks ago I cracked one of the vacuum inlets from the EGR. I put in a small piece of rubber to fill it, but it was basically putting a square peg into a round hole. I decided I'd work on it later. I left the little plastic cover over the EGR off for this reason.

I ran for a few days, it got warmer outside, and then one day I stalled while stopped at a light, after a longish drive. The car restarted after a minute or so, and I drove home. I opened the hood in the driveway with the car running to see if I could reproduce the problem. Lo and behold the cooling fan came on, and I got a monstrous blast in the face as the air blew by the EGR. With the hood closed I can only imagine how much air was being pushed into the vacuum system.

I only had duct tape handy, so I pulled off the appropriate chunk and taped over the aforementioned plug, resolving to get a round plug next time I was at a store... and then, of course, I forgot about it. No codes in the engine, so no orange reminder.

Anyway, a few days ago I stalled; again it was warm outside, I was stopped at a sign, and restarted after a short time. I'd forgotten my old fix, and didn't have time to look at the car, and everything seemed to be running well enough - the car was slightly more sloppy than usual but for the most part was fine - so I figured I'd get along to the weekend.

Yesterday I stalled while turning in to work, so I read through the first 10ish pages of this thread. I went out to check the fuel pump relay, and happened to look over and see my duct tape had fallen completely loose, and the square peg was now again exposed to the cooling fan. I pulled out some electrical tape this time, taped it flat, and it's run perfectly since then; even most of my slight oil burn is gone. It has only been two days of driving but the difference is so dramatic I'm pretty well convinced that was the issue.

Anyway, thanks for the help to all, here's to more face time for vacuum leaks! :D

I've only had my '93 850 for about a month, and it stalled 3 times, twice during moderate accelleration, and once at about 30mph in city traffic. I parused these comments as well as other sites, and decided to shop for a Cam Position Sensor. I ordered one, and while waiting for it to arrive I checked out all the vacuum hoses, and sure enough, under the one-screwed throttle cover, there is a part that I cannot identigy, with (I believe) two rather short hoses. One had a small hole burned through. I replaced it in minutes, and it has now been two weeks with no stalling. Don't know if this was the fix, but may well be worth checking into.

Sorry all. I tried to read through the threads....got to about 8 and my eyes began to bleed!!!! My 94 850 stalls when I'm driving on the expressway and i'm comming up to a toll booth so I push the clutch and place stick in nutral, (wether or not I keep the clutch in or not it doesnt matter) Anyyway the RPMs drop and the car stalls. It only seems to happer if i'm going over 50mph and I push in clutch. I pop the clutch and it starts. this is the only time it happens. If I slow with the transmition in gear and down shft no prob, only when clutch in and coasting. I have replaced the fuel filter. Any ideas

Also where can I talk about A\C problems

Thanks

jason

After stablizing the Fuel Pump Relay (which was giggling in it's socket), cleaning the MAS, and cleaning the Throttle Body (10 minutes job), the car is running very well.

So far, no stalling and a lot more power to boot.

Thanks for all your posts.

You're welcome. I found th answer to this on this page, about 2/3 of the way down.

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/volvo_850.php

This page has dozens of do-it-yourself fixes for the 850. There are other similar pages for other models. Type in your year and the word 'repair' or 'repairs' and your model should come up. Answers to almost anything can be found on this site. I had to hunt a little....

Good luck. Throttle Body cleaning only took about 10 minutes and ws very easy. I'm not mechanically inclined either, but this site made all that really easy.
