I apologized to my 08 S60 yesterday. I’m typically an over-maintenance guy but my weakness is engine air filters.

Checking my maintenance log it had been 2 years and 24,000 miles. I expect to pick up 2mpg on the highway lol.

They are 30,000 mile items but if you live in a dust bowl, 15,000 miles is better

Des Moines is Dutch for Dusty place , I think

I typically don’t like to go more than 15-20k miles, but you are right it is all on conditions. While this car has is on a gravel road once in a blue moon that’s pretty rare. Been scratching my head on recent mpg drop of 1-2, hoping this helps…could be I’m driving into the wind more.
:)

Oh—In the what did you do category I also installed a new hood gas strut as the old one was pretty weak at 15 yrs and 163k. Way more convenient than keeping a properly sized stick around.

With SWMBO out at a Christmas party today, the weather and the telly being utter crap I decided it was time to return to the ‘fir tree clips’ for the wiring harnesses that goes over the cooling fan cowl. I should really have waited until I needed to take the fan off next time, however I just thought that the next time I have to remove the fan it would probably be when I was in a hurry and wouldn’t have time to make a tidy job of my replacement clips.

As suspected it wasn’t as straight forward as first anticipated. I had to remove the ‘fins’ from the clips as they weren’t flexible enough to go through the hole. I needed to find washers with a 6mm hole that were not going to rust away so decided to rob my piggy bank of 5p pieces and drill a hole in them. I had thought about melting the clip pin at the rear to hold it in place but decided that might not be the best approach so instead I used starlock washers.

Next time I need to remove the fan I only need to cut the cable ties, no more searching for fir tree clips the correct size

Clips cut, fins removed, rustproof washers made from 5p coins and starlock washers

In our country its unlawful to deface or alter currency so I would ask that you mail me several 5 pence pieces so I may do a similar job on my wiring.........just kidding, nice tidy job!

Yes stainless steel washers are £3.00 for a pack of 10 so 30p each, so I saved £2.75 using the coins. Probably unlawful here in the UK but Christmas dinner in the Bar-L would save me having to put up with relatives I see once a year...

Yes I could have saved an additional 80% if I used 1p coins, however they are not made from bronze alloy of copper any longer and modern equivalents are subject to corrosion in harsh environments due to being made from copper plated steel
