What i know:

It was impossible to remove the old belt! (Hence why all the write-ups suggest cutting it. The older the tool the better!)

I really tried to slip the belt off and around the nub, but it was impossible. And getting the belt on, around the nub, wasn't easy! But pulling the belt up and to the side, while pushing the bottom of the belt up and around, twisting the hard rubber as much as it could (the new Volvo belt doesn't budge more than a few mm) I finally made the clearance. I still don't understand how this makes sense: How can a belt go on but can't come off?

If anyone has a hard gas line there and wants to take some photos or film a video of me trying to solve this dilemma (and of course has a P80 with those hard gas lines!) let me know! I'm in NYC! 8)

My trick:
- Old belt...cut it to remove.
- New TB...wet it with a bit of water (the part that will slide through the nub), the TB will slide through the infamous oil pump cover nub very well...

Of course always cut the old one off that makes removal trivial, and if you are careful instead of forceful then getting the new one back in isn't bad, you will get it in a few tries. Both have been discussed a billion times here and everywhere lol.

The only real question is about that hard gas line, I am curious about that one.

You pull the starter off and there is a cover you remove and the hole is right there. That and the cam locking tool from IPD and you are set.

I am with Djzuelke, you can feed the Timing Belt up behind the harmonic balancer. Normally helps to have a second person pulling the belt up while you push it up behind the balancer. I is best to feed it through the right side (toward front of car) first as there's a dimple there that needs to be overcome in order to get the belt in the grooves of the sprocket.

Has anyone changed the timing belt on a 2000 with the variable valve timing inlet cam? What is different from the 1999 non-VVT documented here?

The British Haynes manual states that their timing belt change procedure is for pre-2000 without VVT and they can only assume that it's the same with VVT. I'd feel better knowing any differences.

Is there an online source for official Volvo repair guides which might have the procedure for the 2000 with VVT? EManualOnline seems really sketchy. Has anyone tried AllDataDIY? Thanks.

You have to setup the VVT HUB so that the hub is rotated full counter clockwise with respect o the cam, then align the marks as usual. You do this by rotating past the marks by 1/2 a rotation, then rotating backwards to match up the marks. From there, it’s business like the non VVT cars

I like Alldata as it’s web based so I don’t need to drag my msnual(s) between my 4 1999s. The new terms of service only allow access to two devices, a change from previous model, completely understandable.

Thanks. Sounds like I should take off the cam covers on the back of the engine and check the slots in each to make sure they're horizontal. Sounds like a great idea to use the CTA 2864 tool to hold the cams in place at those slots. eEuroparts used to rent this $120 tool but now they don't. Does anyone here have one I could rent?

You don’t need the tool to change the belt, you just set the marks, remove the old belt, Idler, and tensioner, and reinstall.
