Write up was very helpful but the bolts did not come out at all. This is what I ended up having to do on both sides:

Glad it's done!! Works without any issues now.

The only other problem that has come up is a misfire on cylinder 4 (and shaky going up a hill)... I have to figure that one out. Last time it was the positive wire to fuel injector #2....had to run a new wire and problem solved but took a day to figure out what it was and there was no following the bad wire under everything else...

New here, first post.

I just wanted to thank the OP for this excellent write up. Without his attention to detail and simple yet concise explanations, I wouldn't have been able to fumble through this process alone.

I just had this issue with my girlfriend's 2000 S70, where the key would not turn in the ignition.
After having read this thread, I was confident enough to "steal" her car from the cafe parking lot it where it was abandoned. Lol.

I do want to add a note to those who will find this thread and have a Volvo equipped with the anti-theft keys, that the illuminated ring around the ignition must match up with the key should you try to bypass it.

After several attempts to just move the car before the tumbler replacement, I found that the illuminated ring and matching key are the trick to the anti-theft mechanism.
So in order for the car to run, the key must line-up with the II on the illuminated ring of the ignition.

I'm not sure if this has been covered in another thread, I'm still new here but this was an excellent write up and it helped me out a lot.

Thanks

Replaced electrical portion of ignition switch today to cure random blinking of instrument faces. We'll see if it worked.

Please help.

1999 s70 non-turbo.
I just swapped out my old ignition tumbler for one i picked up at junkyard. Everything went smoothly except for the last damn shear bolt.

I go to start it up. Turns over- then Dies! Along with a few instrument panel lights that show up.

What could be wrong? I even tested my old ignition key ring and same thing happened.

Update: Replacement of the electrical portion of the switch did not cure the random blinking. Looks like I'll have to do the tumbler. Anybody know where one can be had for a decent price? I've also heard contradictory info on having to be ordered from Sweden to match your key and some sellers not even asking about keys/VIN number. Anybody got the straight dope on this? I seem to recall replacing one on an 850 a few years back and not needing any key or VIN info to obtain the correct part, and not having to have the part ordered from Sweden.

99 S70.. Takes about a minute of me messing around with the key to get it out of position I and start the car, I'm guessing its time to change the tumbler? Thats all it could be right? Before I plunk down 295.00 for a new tumbler!

Second time doing this (cusscusscuss) job. first time during instillation I left the shear bolt on, when I tried taking it apart this time the bolt head twisted off when trying to remove. :( trying the nail punch removal technique but am not optimistic at this time. Sometimes I wonder if Volvo is worth it. Shear off bolts??? Really??? What the heck for? Engineers should be shot. I tried finding replacement bolts but the heads are too big. Now if I have to drill out I have to take the steering wheel off to get at the electronic accessories ring... I'll have to find those instructions as the torx behind the steering wheel are recessed to the max with no room for the length of my torx driver... Well, now that that rant is over; back to the garage to try again with the nail punch technique...

Why are you doing this thingy?

I posted an update on FREE fix.
Just remove the rectangular plate at the bottom and you are done.
The DIY is below:

Thanks for the excellent Free DYI, it looks great!
I ended up carefully drilling out what was left of the twisted off right bolt head and using a heat gun to warm the lock tight on the left bolt to successfully remove that bolt. I had to heat it twice because I felt it tightening up as I was removing it. (Obviously the nailpunch method did not work and in my judgement would never have worked because of the lock tight on the bolt.) A recommendation for anyone who has to install a new cylinder because the plate removal method didn't work is to buy #6 allen bolts and grind the heads to fit. It was easy and will make the replacement, if necessary, at 300K a lot easier! I replaced ignition switch at 99K miles and this time at 161,675.
p.s. Next time I do the Free fix listed above!!!
