What is everyone's average mpg?

To calculate the average MPG one has to use a fuel log. Also remember many factors affect economy or efficiency such as, road surface, wind direction, road inclination or declination, drive style (aggressive, smooth, Miss Daisy
) fuel octane rating, oil viscosity, engine compression, general servicing, tire type and tire psi and air temperature are factors that alter fuel logs.
Just because some post claim higher MPG figures does not mean their cars are more efficient than others because of all the factors mentioned and there are more. 19 Mpg is fine for the city and 23 on the freeway is what Volvo claimed these 850 can do.
Yes you can get 23mpg in the city if you accelerated slowly and have a long stretched open flat roads with no traffic lights and then No you want get 23mpg if you drive hard between 20 sets of 400 yard traffic lights.
Take the figures with a pinch of salt.

My 2000 V70 with 125,000 miles gets an average of 15mpg in town. On the freewway it is way better at about 22 maybe even 25MPG. I once went over 380 miles and still had a 1/4 of a tank when I got to my destination.

I am averaging exactly 22.6 US MPG in pure winter city driving in the last 7000 KM in my 1998 S70 T5. This is the worst time of year for my MPG

Update to my original post: once I got down out of the mountains on a recent 2,500-mile trip, I saw 27-29 mpg consistently on straight highway drives - in relatively cold conditions too.

Our '99 s70 AWD 136k miles only gets an average of 22- city and hwy and regular gas-the best ever was 25 on a long trip with only one person and light luggage and no speeding! I really miss our 86 740 GLE N/A manual w/OD it always got mid thirties even when I sold it with 255k Miles!!!

Speed drastically alters the mpg figure. I've found that 55 to 58 is the most efficient speed but this depends on load, road angle and wind direction of course. The 5 in-line can touch 31 to 34mpg. Driving at 65mph believe it or not changes the mpg to 25-29.
70mph will reduce the mpg figure drastically as would driving at 120mph and so on.
I'm driving back to LA tomorrow so I'll make a fuel log and post the results. I don't have a scantool but the old method will do.
Life would be enjoyable if it wasn't so painful to live.

Pfft, I'm way too impatient to drive that slow. Between 65-75 depending on what the speed limits were. Once I got out of the hills in VA/MD and headed up towards NJ/NY, going was easy and flat. Much of PA's speed limits from Scranton onwards are only 55, which coupled with a cop car sitting every 5 miles is pretty annoying. But it also was the most scenic part of the drive and my favorite part of my "grand tour".

Over the past year, since I bought my '00 V70XC used with 139,000 in Nov '09, to presently having 173,000 miles on the car.
Gas mileage as not changed much. I commute aprox. 19 miles one way with mixed slow hwy that has about 6 traffic lights spaced about 1.5 miles to 3 miles from each and max speed limit of 45, though I drive 55mph on that section. Also, there is an in town section of 35mph with traffic lights spaced aprox 3000 yards to 1 mile apart. I avg about 20.5 mpg.
On the round trips to San Francisco and back ( about 10 of those last year), which include a 4400 ft high pass, I avg 26.5mph doing 75mph most of the way.
I am using synthetic oil in the engine only, and I am pleased with the Denso E3 plugs. Front tires are at 40psi, rear tires at 33psi @ 1500 ft elevation. That's the elevation I'm located at. When I get to my destination, San Francisco/ Sea level, and let the tires cool down, they drop 5 psi.
I'm glad to see that I am not losing too much mpg compare to all the front drivers that reported here.

23.5 combined in the summer.
21 combined in the winter, we have winter fuel here.
I could do better if I was more conservative with the foot, but I just drive how I want. 21mpg doesn't bother me, both of our Jeeps only average 16ish this time of year.
