Were you using real winter tires or "all season" tires? I have seen AWD vehicles, without winter tires,spin on a very steep ice covered hill. It also takes experience to drive on ice, especially wet ice. You can make anything spin if you give it enough power.

At least on mine, there is a dashboard switch labeled "TRACS" as circled in image below:
