If you want to test the fuel pump relay, warming up the old one will not be a very reliable way to do it. I would pull out the relay and jumper terminals 15 and 87 on the socket. Use a paper clip.

What will this test? I will give this a shot if the relay change doesn't work.

This will test whether or not the relay is broken inside. The paperclip will do the relay's job instead. The difference is with the paperclip the fuel pump will always be running, instead of just when the engine calls for it. That can be dangerous if the car breaks a fuel line or something so the paperclip is not a permanent solution, just a way to test the relay.

If the paperclip test fixes your problem, then get a new relay. If it doesn't, then the existing relay is fine. So if you can, do the paperclip test first, before you spend any money on a new relay.

Just did this on my '00 V70xc. Engine cranked and turned over then died. If I held the gas pedal down it would keep running but only at idle speed regardless of how far the pedal was down. Jumped those terminals and it started right up, ran like a top. So I took the relay housing off...Holy God this is a complex little bastard! Your basic relay plus a circuit board, a dozen resistors, 2 capacitors, and a 16 pin processor. As far as I can tell it has power (15), ground (31), power to fuel pump (87) and an input to the ECM (31b) at pin B:45. Not sure why it needs all that but that's what makes 'em so expensive. Also, and I swear on my mothers future grave, it has a money symbol on the board! Looks like a baseball with an S through the stitching.
Why does accountability keep hitting a glass ceiling?

Makes sense. Thanks Erik!
