Could this be one of those mysterious intermittent ignition switch problems? I've been reading a lot of old threads lately about this weird phenomenon.

FWIW...

Ok, further update. No new check engine codes, just the secondary air pump. Changed fuel pump relay. No start. Changed fuel system relay. No start. Changed Cam position sensor. No start. Changed
TPS - old one full of water? No start. Changed coil. Started right up and idling fine in the driveway.
We'll see what happens next.

Whew! One less mystery to plague a Volvo lover.

So how did the coil get fried?

I did that on an 855 with several issues by disconnecting the high voltage lead from the distributor and turning it over. I suddenly had no spark and couldn't figure out why A forum member clued me in. You can disconnect the 12 volt supply to the coil w/o a problem but not the high voltage lead to the distributor.

Have you checked the starter solenoid or start engine yet? That was my problem last year. The thing is hard to find its under the intake. Cost was 50 bucks at local junk yard the one near me will basically let you test a part for 30 days then return once you get the intake off the starter is 2 bolts might be worth the test if your junk yard will let you return the part.

No idea if the coil actually fried, or just died. But it's been running fine since a replacement was installed. Now I just need to solve the secondary air pump engine code. Replaced all the components, but still not functioning correctly. Not sure if the vacuum activated solenoid is functioning correctly.

Tried that. None of the links that I could find are functioning, they were all dead. I have all brand new components in the system, but can't tell if the air pump is actually turning on. Just have not had the opportunity to investigate further, have work to do on another vehicle right now.

Give the gas tank a good thunk with a rubber mallet. Could be a sticking fuel pump. Or a weak coil. Have you rechecked your timing? Could have jumped depending on the tensioner..just throwing ideas out there.
