Let me get this straight.
Your insurance company totaled it, they gave you 7K for an 01 with high miles and you bought it back????.....

(I'll await your answer before I finish my sentence)

OK I'm glad I misunderstood that but at that point you should have sold it and taken whatever you got for it... you were already WAY ahead of the game on an 01.
Pocketed the money and bought an 04 or so

i cant sell it. it is now labled as ''flood damaged''. Also,,,since most of the ny nj coast area got flooded,,,it seemed that every car that was used and for sale went up in price. All I would be able to afford at that time would be a real piece of crap. My other car was flood totalled and we had to get rid of it..we didnt do much better in the used car dept also,,a lot of money for a lot of miles.
edit: well,,,even buying a used car was very scary because you had to wonder if the car had flood damage to and they were trying to ditch it on you. The dealer we used for my wifes car said their whole lot/showroom was under water. (It was one of the salesmans cars we bought). I asked the crook....I mean used car dealer...."how do I know if this car was in the flood". He said by law he couldnt sell it to me then. I then said "well,,what if I take it to my mechanic after I buy it and he says it was in a flood". He said "then we'd have to work something out, but it wasnt in a flood".

Regardless of all that....... tomorrow I'm going to drain another 6 quarts or whatever comes out and refill it and see what happens. My neighbor said he thinks its a linkage issue or computer issue. just his 1 cent.

You need about three refills to swap out all the old transmission fluid, I guess you will have to idle it around the block to run the new fluid through. I'm a bit worried your trans fluid got dark quickly that sure is pointing to a toasted transmission. They don't like salt water baths.

Have you priced a used transmission and considered swapping it in?

i'd rather not spend the money on another trans that can have problems too. I dont think the salt water got to it,,it was mainly on one side of the car the way it was parked....I guess.
Can I let it idle in the driveway? will that move enough fluid around or does it have to be rolling?

I really don't know. I would definitely want to cycle through all the gears including reverse.

update: I drove the car like an 80 year old lady today for 15 miles. Not bad except for a few hard shifts and a general lack of power. I didnt go over 40, I kept at it regular street speeds. Neutral was sometimes drive but usually popped out. I went through the manual gears 1-5 and they worked fine. Reverse is gone. The engine has a hard time revving past 2000rpm in reverse.
I took it to a decent hill and got to the top and put it in neutral (hoped it popped out of D) as it rolled backward I hit it in Reverse. It shuddered and shaked and made some metal noise and the engine stalled.
Strange part is,,with the engine off I can push it in reverse as far as I can go..but with the engine running reverse is gone.

Drain and fill, drain and fill, drain and fill

Let's see how she does in 3000 miles.

So can you get to work driving in manual mode? Didn't you always want a manual?

yeah,,I picked up some more fluid today but didnt get a chance. did another 17 miles just now. put it in N and I went about 30 feet before it popped out. Still no reverse.
No,,I never wanted manual. I'm an automatic person.
I can take it somewhere I guess,,I just better hope I dont have to reverse out of a spot. Cant parallel park, cant pull into a parking space head first,,or back into it. I take a highway to work,,I would hate to lose a gear then.
I did some more reading,,,besides the trans being shot,,,there could be a lockup solonoid that is keeping R from working.
oh, well, I'll change fluid tomorrow.
edit: I forgot...somewhere it said to disconnect the negative on the battery, replace it and drive slowly. When I put negative back on the lights by my rearview mirror wont shut off and my moon roof wont work at all now.
