Sounds like you have a good plan. Note that replacing the connector is not really a casual troubleshooting option, the connector is an integrated part of the main engine wiring harness. I don't think I have ever heard of that connector needing replacement, but I suppose a pin or two could need a new female end.

Update.

I continue to have the stumbling I experienced before the 171 code showed up.

Today the light came on but it wasn't the 171 it was the 442 small evap leak.

Now I had this code a couple months ago and replaced the cap and it stayed off until now so of course I thought I had the easy fix, I did not recently fill up and I replaced with a genuine Volvo cap. I realize the likely culprit is the j hose on the charcoal canister but given I have a 98 it is under the battery in the wheel well. Not exactly easy I guess I will need to pop the rivets and get in there.

So my question now is could the stumbling be related given it would be a vacuum leak or am I looking at two different issues now?

I never read anyone that had the small leak code have stumbling problems.

I did come across on brickboard an old tsb updating the engine control software and the person who had that done had the same stumbling issues and it fixed it for them. The dealer found the tsb but was difficult because 98 doesn't use vidas but I plan on getting it done as up until the new code I for sure thought that would fix it.

So with this new info what thoughts do you guys have on steps to check?
