rguzz wrote:Thanks for all the info. New to the forum but peeked at my heater core which is original Volvo and yellowed. Not leaking. Heat does not come from all vents, only drivers side? so if lucky new core might improve this, though sounds more like a mechanical flap issue somewhere. Plan to follow DIY Robert's pointers, and will try the Swedish Car Parts replacement. Lots of good info on how to DIY on this one.
Heat on one side not the other would not be a heater core issue, but a flapper/diverter valve issue somewhere.

Do your HVAC lights flash on startup?

---- Spring 2017 - Follow Up ----

Well, it didn't get cold enough during the winter of 2015/2016 to really
make a call on extreme cold weather performance for this low budget core,
but this winter saw plenty of -30/-40 and I got a good feel for it's capabilities.

I'm happy to report that this core does a very good job!

Using the higher temp OEM thermostat and this low cost Estonian core, it stayed
quite warm and comfy in my car this winter. I didn't find the time to get scientific
and put a thermocouple into the vent, but in my objective opinion ( and observing
MUCH less frost on the windows ), I've got to say -

The Swedish Car Parts Heater Core is Fairbanks Approved!

Woah, inflation!!! (Or perhaps some other economics term I'm unfamiliar with...)

Price has shot up to $70...

I would say price has gone up to meet demand, so not quite inflation. lol Either way I'm glad I bought mine back before the price hike.

polskamafia mjl wrote: 27 Sep 2015, 18:22 Good to know. I literally just finished installing this heater core. I had heard that it can smell weird initially so I ran it through the dishwasher. Unfortunately I didn't think to compare it to the old one so I was unaware of all of the differences. I'm in Pennsylvania so hopefully it will be adequate for our winters here.
The one I recently installed seems to be putting out a good amount of heat. I'm in Philadelphia.

I didn't clean mine beforehand and had the smell. The smell goes away once the core has been had a couple of good heat soaks. Glad I didn't take it apart to try and kill the smell.

Sept 11, 2017 it was $39.95 PLUS $10 shipping. Now it has free shipping, so not as much of an increase as it seems. Glad I got mine before the jump.

Mine split at the bottom of the tank in my now sold 2000 V70NA. Disappointed to say the least. Had less than 75,000kms and was not subjected to any overheat or overpressurisation. Mine must have been the only failure in what seems to be a fairly large sample size.

I sent a mail to Swedish Car Parts asking them why someone on Ebay could sell their part much cheaper than they do on their own web shop. Their simple response was that the one being sold on Ebay isn't their product.

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it from Ebay, only that you should keep in mind that it probably isn't quality assured, at least it isn't done so by SCP and isn't warrantied by them either.
