Yeah... 20 year old car... no transmission trouble, smooth shifting, driving it like Volvo says to drive it. I think it's best to keep doing what I'm doing - listening to Volvo, that is - instead of unsubstantiated claims of some mystical "excess wear".

Misha thanks for the kind words. Yes I rescued 3 or 4 transmissions from obscurity but I'm no expert.

I'm not going to listen to too much of Volvo's advice like the fluid on our autos is "fill for life" or everything in the manual because let's face it, the info was written well before the thousands of roadtesters, the buying public, were unleashed upon them. Aisin Warner made mistakes like the faulty B4 cover on 5 speeds and the poor material for bushings on the solenoids.

Many dealers are ignoring that "fill for life" message now that real life testing has taken place. Failure to ignore that advice in the "manual" has resulted in thousands of failed transmissions.

Sommerfeldt you fail to realise that even though I use the auto manually I understand that manual use is fine as long as it's done in a way that doesn't stress internals too much and that driving style will come from years of driving experience.

Which is exactly what I've been saying. There's no way that using the auto tranny - including the ones on our 850s - will result in excessive wear. A kickdown using the kickdown (so as not confuse misha...) will stress the transmission far, far more than what I'm talking about.

Hehe when I was a younger lad I chewed through 3 manual transmissions in less than 2 years. The 'boxes were fitted in a 4 cylinder 1974 Holden Torana which were reskinned 1968 Vauxhall Vivas. They were delicate 'boxes for younger drivers who would do all the regular things like using engine braking, towing tandem trailers and double-declutching. Grandmas and grandpas would drive them to the shops with a yearly oil change and keep them 20 years. :)

I soon after got into Mitsis and discovered their excellent rear drive Japanese 'boxes

Since then I've owned 3 four speed Volvos (one of them a 960) and about 4 five speed autos.
I must still be hard on autos however have failed to totally kill one yet :)
