Let's look for 12 volts on the input to the coils and see if that's there.

Probably not.

It's worth checking that the right connectors are on the right coils, too

Never disconnected coils or injectors, so they're still in the right order.

Should it have 12VDC on the power pin any time the key is ON?

I think so. There was a thread on faulting the coil circuit with the circuit diagram posted and the coil power comes from a relay not the ECU. I'll see if I can find it.

Couldn't, but I do recall this is wired somewhat " weird"

From the top fuse bank, fuse 8 12v comes shown to the ECU relay 2/232 which powers up the ECU, the trigger passer for this relay goes on to power another bus of 5 fuses 11/B

The fourth fuse powers a common point 23/243 of terminal 4 on all four coils

Short answer: Yes.

Excellent. 12VDC is present. Compression test (70psi, 70psi, 70psi, 0psi, 0psi) seems to indicate that I've mistimed the motor. Hopefully haven't bent the valves cranking it. It certainly seemed crankable by hand.

Still scratching my head over how that happened. The crankshaft never moved, the cams were locked, and I installed the sprockets with the marks lined up. What else is there to line up? Lot of stuff out there on the web makes this seem really complicated, but if you have the right tools, it seems really easy and straightforward. Guess not.

The tensionor doesn't seem to want to stay in place. I adjust the indicator so that it's in the center, but then after cranking the motor, I'll see it's shifted (maybe from tension changes during piston/valve contact :() I readjust it, and then next time, it appears adjusted too far the other direction.

The exhaust has a VVT. Since I didn't take it apart at all, I just line it back up and snugged it down. Did I miss something?

Yeah. You have to align the marks, untension the VVT hub, then realign marks.

I'll try to find a better thread

I sure seemed like that ought to be the case. I was following the workshop manual steps. Mighta missed something in there. Lotsa "See specifications/mechanical/curses&hexes" and so forth that i wasn't always able to chase down.

OK, I found this.

Took some effort to reformat it to be a little easier on the eyes. I definitely missed "Turn the variable valve timing unit clockwise to its limit position so that the unit is in its end position." and "This is to ensure that the variable valve timing (VVT) unit is in its end position when the timing gear pulley is tightened."

But, even with this as a guide, I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do here in which order. How do I hold the VVT?
