I think it's pretty clear that a Gates water pump is a 20K water pump. A stopgap if you need to get on the road for a little. But anything more than that and you're asking for trouble. I wonder how long the water pump made noise for before it went out like that. I heard one of Robert's videos of a water pump that was making noise (at least I think it was Robert's...) and the impeller rubbing against the housing really makes a distinct sound.

Do we have an MVS consensus on the longevity of a Hepu water pump?

My cousin has a Gates pump.... that's interesting.

I'm very interested about the Hepu pump. From what I've seen, it looks like a good alternative to the Aisin.

The best and unbeatable alternative for Aisin is SKF and then Hepu.
Rspi said that he had seen a Hepu that failed in 40k on these cars but lasts forever in rwd cars...i don't know..

It's a lonely example....other members who have Hepu complained about gasket leak in a pretty short time after installation.Could be that it was a miss during installation..that old gasket didn't removed completely.

That's an easy mistake as far as the gasket not being fully removed, but you need to be careful with such a vital component. Much more of a pain having to replace the pump (or having it fail on you) than it is to replace, say, an oil filter that's leaking because the old gasket was still on the engine.

Men, I even dislike those black gaskets. They are a 60 minute clean up when removed, about 100 pieces.

Why even consider an "alternative" when you have access to the best, Aisin. Hey, I'm doing a 4 hour job on a critical system of the engine, I think I'll buy xyz and see if it makes it 70,000 miles...

I run Aisin pumps 10 years regardless of the miles. Mine failed in 20 years, 258,000 miles. I've seen others fail in 2 years, less than 35,000 miles... leaking. The one referred to above had about 12,000 on it if my memory serves me correct. The shaft was bouncing around so much it was making the head noisy. It actually sounded like a cam was loose, bouncing around in the head. When I pulled the cover and seen it, I screamed at Buster Brown, shut it down. I thought the shaft would come apart at any second, destroying the head.

A year or so ago I was about to leave my daughter in Ohio, changing a cam seal and seen the water pump leaking. Called the dealer and they wanted $285 for the pump. Went to the junkyard and found one with a 2 year old date on it. I feel much better about a $6 junkyard Aisin pump than anything in the local auto parts stores. Besides that, I needed to hit the road ASAP, not wait 3 days for a part to arrive from a Volvo parts supplier.

So, yes I do pull newish Aisin pumps from the junkyard and order the green seals from parts suppliers. Works for me, and those I help.
