I have Mean Green commercial cleaner/degreaser sitting on a shelve. I was never impressed with it except for cleaning oil off the concrete even then took a lot of scrubbing in a lot of water. But since you reminded me I'll have ro try in....
I picked up my spring compression tool used for $10 on Craigslist. To get mine to work I took a piece of black pipe and cut out an access window on one end. On the other end I drilled a hole through the black pipe to mount it. Some people cut a window in a cheap deep well socket.
If you have access to a welder you can fashion the ideal tool. I did this search on Bing "diy valve spring compression tool" and hit the image button. Many options - even a large C-clamp with a modified end. To be honest I enjoyed the process of getting my $10 tool to work more than I did the rest of the head work.
Mean Green is good stuff and safe. I have had luck with Simple Green. 5Rivers results are impressive.
Going to try the valve compression tool from advance auto 1st. Nothing on Craigslist in the Rochester NY area.
Or if I have to I can get one off Amazon for 20$ they seem to open wide enough to fit and come with a few different size attachments.
This is for one time use... ill never do this Again....lol.
5 years ago this wouldnt of been a problem I didnt mind working on anything...
But now with all the hardware in my neck, plates and screws holding vertebrae together and finally a triple fusion looking up and down turning my head left and right causes me great discomfort plus I suffer from nerve damage down my right arm into my right hand.
To where I cant hold a tool , aches and buzzes like its asleep that numb feeling....
In short after 20,30,60 mins Im done for hours and forget me trying to do anything once I take meds for this....lol
But ill keep at it.... I like to get the head milled just to be sure.... ill have to check around, after all I live in the freaken woods of Palmyra NY

While there! I'd also soak the vvt hubs is some good cleaner. Oil passages and chambers inside the hubs can also get clogged and prevent them from working properly.
