Re: PCV System Repair on a Volvo 5-cylinder

Post by Henster »

I have no air pump relay installed in my 2000 S70 GLT SE turbo with 167,000 miles. There are no metal connector pieces for it in the relay box, but there is a space for it. Volvo.com couldn't give me a reason for it. I have been thinking about doing a PCV kit replacement as I have air pressure coming out of the engine oil refill, more at higher rpm's. Does anyone know if the air pump would cause this, or if this year model has a different relay for the crankcase ventilation. Otherwise, PCV/internal exhaust system cleaning or replacement (which doesn't seem to work half of the time, according to these forums). This project began because I had white smoke from the tailpipe only at startup, but no visible leakage anywhere at all. I found a loose clip on the air filter box, and the smoke hasn't come back, yet I have some air pressure from engine block still, not enough to burst a balloon. Any help or thoughts? Should I bypass the ventilation system and just go from oil cap to air filter? Thanks.

There is no secondary air injection system on the 2000 model, therefore no relay.
The secondary air pump is not related to the PCV system. The air pump is there to warm the intake on startup for some stupid emissions reason along the lines of cleaner exhaust gases. It wouldn't have anything to do with excessive crankcase pressure.

Is the balloon inflating? If it's at the point of inflating, I would highly recommend replacing the PCV components and cleaning out the ports on the block. That excess pressure can cause seals to blow out, which can lead to problems... ask me how I know...
Otherwise if it's sucking in (which it isn't since you say there is pressure) or staying relatively steady (NOT inflating), it can wait.

Thanks! I rubber-banded a glove and the glove inflated, but not to where it stretched the rubber glove at all. Will research more and probably take it all apart and clean it...soon.

Good, then I'd definitely put it on the short list. I recommend changing the oil trap and all of the hoses.

I'm getting my feet wet studying this post my dipstick is smoking and have bad fumes. At the begining it states if you have a turbo you may want to skip to step 7. Should that be step 11? Thanks!

Step 7 is super important, don't skip it.

Where does the thread say something about skipping, which post? You basically can't skip any of the steps for a turbo car. This is written for a turbo car.

Wow, after closer inspection, the hose leading to the PTC valve was completely unplugged! I recently had my timing belt done, water pump replaced, and master brake cylinder replaced. I guess my mechanic accidentally bumped the hose out of place, or it blew off from pressure. I will now clean the PTC valve, and then if needed, replace the PCV system. The rubber glove inflates a little, but when I rev the RPM's the glove gets sucked in. Very little dipstick smoke, and it runs like a jet engine again. Hallelujiah! Thanks for the help guys!

Very good! Disconnected hoses are never good, especially during diagnosis.
