The plastic part is much larger. Now that is not so say that someone may have replaced the key with an incorrect one. I am not sure of the metal blades are the same and can be cut to fit a 98.

A very Happy Christmas to you and everyone else on MVS! Safe driving if you have to travel.

Hi Neil,

They all appear to be transponder keys in that link so dont see any that are not yet.

Anyway, here is a pic of my key on one side with the pattern of the key smoothed out so nobody can see the pattern, but the body of the key is not retouched.

Note it says "Made in UK" on that one side, and the other side is says "YMOS" or something like that.

Does this look like a regular key or transponder key?

When i look on the web for transponder and non transponder key they all seem to look the same.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Hello there,

That's what Steve said too but then somebody else came here to the forum and said they have a 1998 v70 and they have a transponder so i started wondering if some cars could actually have one. Then i read that maybe only in the UK not in the US so i guess mine doesnt have one. I am happy about that got enough problems without that too ha ha.

I had a feeling my key did not have one because that hole with the keychain goes is so large, taking up a lot of space where a chip could be hidden instead. The ones i see online have smaller holes.

Thank you for the info.

Im just curious, how can you tell this is a non transponder key?
I have my guesses but still lost when it comes to this issue and dont own an X-Ray machine ha ha.
Oh i guess i could break the plastic open (ha ha). That would kind of ruin the key though.

I can tell quite easily because this is the transponder key I have for my EU spec '96 R (EU spec Volvos got immobilizers in 1996, including the erratic kingdom which was part of of Europe back then). They needed to size up the key to make the transponder fit. It just won't fit inside of the old style keys. The other thing is the fob.

Clemens beat me to it. The black 'body' of the key is a lot bigger to hold the chip. Yours is not it.

Oh ok i see they do look different, i just wonder why the heck they dont mark them "transponder" that would be best i think.

I do have a key fob however.
The only thing is, i dont have a moose on my keychain that probably has a lot to do with this (ha ha).

Thanks for the pic.

Hi Neil,

Yes i do see differences now, the metal part going into the plastic part is much wider on my key.
Too bad they just dont mark them with the functionality like "transponder" or "not transponder".

Would you happen to know the size of the chip that goes inside these Volvo transponder keys?
I'll check the web too.

Oh hey, do the transponder key bodies come apart to get inside with a battery or something?

Also, in cars with an immobilizer is there a security light that goes out or something once the system recognizes the key?

Thanks for the info again.

In the European market Volvo released things a year earlier. Their first V70 in the Euro market was a 1997 V70, the same car/model was released in. the US market as a 98 V70. Etc. So a 98 V70 in Europe matches to a 99 V70 in the US market.
