I installed mine last March and have put 14,000 miles on it with no problems so far.

2001 S80-T6
ETM replaced at 99,997 miles by dealer with yellow Sticker type.
ETM lasted until 222K miles. Did not fail completely but cut off twice, bucking, surging, touchy throttle, poor performance in general. Rest of engine in good shape. Never had an ETM related code. No other engine codes present before or after.

New Throttle is totally different. Car runs great. I know this is a stretch but shifting seems smoother too. Idle is rock steady at 750 RPM. I must remember the old girl has 222K miles on her and treat her accordingly. She wants me to get a ticket!

XeModex reapired my unit on the American Thanksgivng Holiday.
Fedex was expensive but it worked out so I could install the modified unit on Black Friday. Now dubbed ETM Friday.

XeModex cleans unit, paints part of it, replaces split loom tubing on cable. Included old thin film pots (4) in bag for inspection. Very professional company. Packing for shipment was impressive. Sealed padded bag, not taped. XeModex Sticker replaces Volvo Sticker.

Kudo's to XeModex and Don Wilson. They have done an outstanding job. Don's Root Cause Analysis was great. I R an Engineer too.

I understand that the new Bosch tpye ETM's are easier and less costly to replace than the Marelli Italian ETM's but that they also have thin film pots in them and are subject to wear. It makes me wonder why manufacturers use parts so critical to performance and safety that are designed to wear out. I could defend Volvo's original choice in that Maserati and (I think) Bugatti use the same ETM. However, Volvo's handling of the problem is inexcusable. I pity those in other countries that have no recourse like us Yanks. My ETM lasted as long as it did due to the Volvo software "Fix" and the fact I mostly drive on the Interstate.

In the industrial automation field I work in we strive to utilize products that don't break, don't wear out, and don't require maintenance. Examples include LED Lamps and FLASH Memory for battery free program storage. Is a Digital Angle Sensor (Hall effect) so novel and expensive that car manufacturers don't or won't use them?

1 hour to remove, 2.5 hours to reinstall. I did not remove the fan but my hands are a bit nicked up. I took some time to repair deteriorated split loom tubing on wiring. I tape all of the tubing and it makes it last much longer.

Please excuse my lengthy email...

Have to admit I was a little skeptical because nothing ever seems to be that EASY...well, I had alot of issues with erratic Rpms, hard starting, and stalling. Sent the ETM to XeMODeX and WOW...started Great! IT has never started and ran this great! I highly recommend this product even only after 30+miles...

I will update if anything changes, but so far it runs great!

This is the second Xemodex ETM that I've installed in my second 2000 V70. The first Xemodex ETM in my wifes car is still performing well after a year of use. The new Xemodex ETM that I just installed is also operating flawlessly. I didn't have to do a software reload this time. Car idle much more smoothly, and the hesitation and surging that I had with the original Volvo ETM are now gone. The acceleration appears to be smooth. I am absolutely thrilled with the Xemodex ETM.

I'm happier with the remanufacturing in Canada than with the Colorado TDM operation. The workmanship is better IMHO. They sent BOTH TPS potentiometer films that were removed from the ETM I sent them. The scratches on the carbon film had worn all the way though on one of them. Although there wasn't a large area that had been scrapped off, I could imagine that the bare area on the film would cause me the hesitation and surging that I experienced.

In conclusion, I strongly recommend that anyone with a 1999-2001 Volvo with the Volvo ETM REPLACE it with the Xemodex alternative. You won't be disappointed - but you will be alot safer and secure with the Xemodex ETM..

Cheers! Rabbit-Rabbit

I just replaced the ETM in my 1999 V70 with an XeMODeX replacement.

Ordering the XeMODeX ETM over the phone was a pleasure. I provided my VIN and ordered a new ETM with the software preloaded, I didn't have to send my current ETM in first. My new ETM arrived within 4 business days by FedEx Ground.

I'm not a mechanic, but I did the installation myself with no trouble. I already had the latest ETM recall software installed, which is a requirement. It took about 2.5 hours start to finish to do the work. I found the tips and hints on this forum very helpful. The hardest part was figuring out how to remove the air intake pipe from the existing ETM, in my case the hose clamp was behind the ETM (it was a tight fit to get my hand in there to loosen it). Removing the fan wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought it would be. A great tip was to temporarily secure the gasket with a few drops of instant glue when installing the new ETM. No software upgrades needed, no trip to the dealer need.

With the new XeMODeX ETM installed, it feels like I am driving a new car! I've put on about 60 miles since installing the new ETM, and so far, so good! No more hunting at idle. No more surging when decelerating. No more near stalls. Acceleration is as smooth as can be. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. I would highly recommend anyone suffering from ETM issues to go with XeMODex's alternative solution... you won't be dissapointed!

2000 V70 SE currently w/93,000 miles, purchased used in 2005 at 78,000 miles (car is mostly "errands" only car). Major tune-up done in July 2009. Nothing but flack from 2 different Volvo service departments whenever ETM problem is brought up (one wanted $300 just to tell us if the ETM software update had ever been done--at least the second place told us for free, yes, it had been done by the first dealership who had wanted the $300, but other than that they insisted we only needed new spark plugs). Independent mechanic advised us the ETM had been replaced already at least once (yellow label). The car has always had the hesitation upon acceleration. Recently started the "surging" as well. My husband read up on the XeMODeX offer and decided to try it. Turn around was very quick, but results have been less than satisfactory. The car runs even worse than before. In addition to the hesitation, and surging, it has also started doing the following: Sometimes difficult to start--it takes 3-4 tries to get the engine to turn over. Sometimes when car is started it thinks it is a Toyota. The rpms shoot up to around the 4 mark and the car sounds like it is ready to take flight--all the while being in park. We immediately turn the car off, wait a couple of seconds and try again. Starts right up and acts like nothing had previously happened. It is currently sitting in the driveway, as we believe it is now way too dangerous to be driving. Might have our indy guy try to figure out a temporary fix, just enough to get it running semi decently so we can trade it in. My husband's always been a Volvo guy (his '94 850 commuter car w/ 243K miles still runs like a champ), but after this experience I think we're done with them. Sorry now we wasted $600 on the "permanent" fix. Wish we'd just gotten rid of it to begin with.

Wife's 99 v70. NA Auto 162k miles Yellow sticker on the old part.
Easiest installation imaginable. I actually spent more time gathering the tools from my messy garage than spent on the installation. Before, the car ran fine, no symptoms, no warnings, until on a cold day, it left my wife stranded with the engine trying to rev to 6000rpm at idle. The ETS light came on, limp mode freaked her out, and she told me she would never drive the car again.

I got the part Friday morning, put it on this afternoon, stopped at AUTOZONE to clear the ETS light, and the car runs great. Steady idle at 900 rpm. Good throttle response, no problems. I spent $649 Canadian. After I receive my core deposit it should come total of $505USA.

I am not happy about having to spend this much money on a problem I thought was fixed by a recall. However, when I consider what the dealership alternative would have cost, I am ecstatic.
I will update this report in 3 weeks. and tell you if I am still happy with the product. XeModeX Customer service is GREAT.

My other car is a 93 945. NA 350,000 miles. Not pretty, but rock solid.

Purchased the car used 40 days ago. suspected ETM problem and priced accordingly. Previous owner (3rd) apparently not aware of warranty. I had local dealer perform ETM potentiometer sweep test (failed) $50.00 diagnostic charge. Make sure you specify you only want this test otherwise they will perform lengthy diagnosis.

Installed XeModeX unit with my close friend who is also a volvo indy shop owner. He never knew about the product until I made him aware of it. Also he never replaced a unit due to the extended warranty. He donated his assistance and his shop space just to see what the replacement was like. He will now be able to take care of his other Volvo clients and give them a better product at a better price.

What a dream it is to drive.
