I got the itch again. I saw two nice mid-teens V60's In Colorado recently, one a T-6. You know, I did a specification comparo with a GTI 4-door, a car I also really like, and the GTI, with seats folded, has more room in the back than a V60 seats folded. Is that weird or what?

That rear cargo volume thing is bugging me. If you look at both cars...how can that be? But they measure that in pure volume of the entire shape. The Golf is boxier and taller, the V60 has a lower, sloping roof and tapered side glass and hatch, and I think that's where the difference is.
But often when you need to carry things, you need some length for long things, or a flat space for a big rectangular box, I generally don't pack the thing up to the roof. So, usable floor area might be bigger in the V60.

Spent several hours helping my ex-Volvo mechanic friend to remove the engine short block from his 2012 S60 T5 FWD.
What a pain they are to work on. He was convinced the engine could come out the top without removing the trans. After many hours and questioning his belief on the engine coming out it did. But it was not easy and in reality we should have dropped the subframe with the engine and trans. We probably wasted about 2 hours as he was determined to get the engine out through the top. The difficulty is that the crank pulley in countersunk under the RHS inner fender panel. There is not sufficient room to really get the engine out even with the pulley removed. We had the trans mounts loosened but even moving that as far left as it would go only allowed the engine to come out but turning it slightly and using a long pry bar to force it away from the inner fender. Not recommended. In his defense, he has never pulled a P3 S60 engine out before.
As we were working at his current place of work (beautiful recent JLR dealership), we had to stop when they closed at 5pm. They are shut (like most dealerships here) on Sunday. So he is hoping to get back to it on Monday evening. I may be helping again, but this time to drop the subframe. To do that, first you have to drop the front bumper as the frame id covered at the front by the bumper. Daft design.
Once we get it out, we can look at fitting the 'new' engine. Original one had snapped the timing belt (what a surprise!). Lots of bent valves. He also has a project C30 that needs an engine swap (bad rod knock). He has a running engine from a S40 prior to being pulled from a breaker. We will fit that to the S60 and then use the block and a good head and build it up for the C30. The plan now is to sell the S60 first to raise funds for the parts for the C30.
Working on the engine when the subframe is out is way easier than when in the car. The engine for the C30 is a little different to the S60, but it looks mostly due to some brackets. The one at the front of the engine that holds the ancillary components is different and on on the rear. Otherwise they are the same. Hopefully, depending on his limited free time, we can get this back up and running fairly quickly and then move on to the C30 engine build.
Neil.
