I have checked, checked again, and rechecked. I most certainly do get 33mpg on the high way (American gallons). The v70R will naturally get much worse fuel economy as it is an AWD, at least the latter ones were not sure if the late 90's ones were. This summer was a perfect opportunity to test this as I drove 8k miles in about 2 months all of it highway. These cars are more than capable of achieving 30mpg. Consider this, my girl friend's BMW w/ an inline 6 and RWD gets 25+ highway. Why is it so unreasonable to believe a 5 cyl FWD can't achieve better?

I know for a fact that these cars can get 32+ mpg, US. Over the last year I have made two trips to NYC from NC. The length is almost exactly 500 miles. I fill the car and go 500 miles north at the posted speed limit, get off the interstate (the fuel warning light is on by this time) and fill up. There is about 5 miles of city (NY) and 10 miles of suburban (NC) driving at either end. I do the same thing in reverse coming back. Mileage is calculated, not read off the computer.

Four trips of 510 miles and every single one was in the 32 mpg range - 32.1 to 32.8. So please do not tell me that these cars, even my AWD XC, can't get 32 mpg regularly on the highway.

Oh, and considering the thread topic - I don't use fuel additives.

So instarx, You're saying that on the high side you're gettig close to 33 mpg. NO WAY. These ar 4000 lbs school buses with turbo engines. It ain't happening.

There must be differences from one specific car to another I believe.

My title says 3800, plus me = 4000lbs. I guess you should back me out, I would add weight to any car. I believe it's still heavier than a midsized suv like an Explorer or GMC Jimmy of that era (1999)

V70 curb weight varies from 3,259 lb for the NA 5 speed base model to 3,728 for the heaviest V70R AWD automatic. 33mph is easily possible with NA cars. Even the heavy AWD cars can pull it off with a little more effort.

If perchance you want to make a little wager that I can't get 32.5 mpg on a 500 mile trip in my stock turbocharged V70 XC schoolbus, just let me know any ol' time. I mean, it's "no way, it ain't happening", right? Easy money for you. :!: Heck, I even have a roof rack.
