Sometimes when I insert my key it just spins 360 degrees. I found this thread and thought I'd try this fix, shouldn't be that difficult. Thing is, I don't know if my 99 s70 has transponder in the key, but if it has, how will it work if I replace the cylinder lock?
Thought I'd just get a cylinder lock from the scrapyard, but will it work with my key? Won't the code be different?

You need the chip near the antenna on a 99, but you can tape the old key near the lock cylinder and skip, reprogramming.
Others have dug the chip, out of the key and glued it into the new key.

Scrap yard usually does not have the key, all you get is the cylinder.
Check ebay: search using key words "volvo s70 ignition lock", you will see some for sale, this way you get the ignition tumbler + key(s).
Or the best option is get a new ignition tumbler with key matched to your car from the Volvo dealer.
PS: "Key spinning 360 degrees" symptom usually means a new tumbler.

I suppose, doesn't hurt to check though.cn90 wrote: ↑17 Apr 2017, 06:33 Scrap yard usually does not have the key, all you get is the cylinder.

A yes but going to Volvo will be expensive, I only payed 300$ for the car.
Do I have to replace the ignition switch to, or can I keep my old one? And if I do decide to get one the scrapyard, the "new" key won't fit the doors, right? So I will have to carry both keys with me, in case the remote dies. Damn. Might be easier to just get a proper tumbler from Volvo and install it myself.

On a 99 you need VIDA to program a chip to your car.

Correct.
You need the chip from the key, not the fob. The fob security controls the locks only, the key controls the ignition immoboliser

But I would still need to always carry 2 keys with me if the remote battery fails, I can't open the doors with the new key.
But do you think that cutting off the bottom plate of the tumbler could make my problem go away? Beacuse that mostly seems to help if the key get's stuck, which it isn't.

Just replaced the ignition switch (electrical portion) on my 2005 XC90 2.5T.
While there I removed the bottom plate on a preventive basis.
The XC90 setup is virtually identical to the 1998 S70.
- Removed the bottom plate, now key cannot go past position 0 and SW is locked!
- I thought I bricked the tumbler! After some thinking, I did the following:
* Got a pick tool and a pair of pliers (small tip) and grabbed the small little pieces out. Still no go, key still stuck.
* Now I decided to remove the tumbler: dremel tool to cut slots on the tamper-proof screws, used punch/small hammer to tap it out.
Sweet surprise, the XC90 used no Loctite, so it came out nice.
* Once the tumbler is out, use a small hammer and tap the SW Lock Rectangular Piece down.
* Re-install everything.
All is well now.
So if you think you brick the tumbler, you did not. Do exactly as shown and you will save the tumbler.
