It just occurred to me...

How do I know how to place the external gear correctly?

I guess I need to use a 9V battery to get the range of motion on the new motor and map that to the existing motor, and then place the gear correspondingly.

When I took mine apart I marked the position of the external gear on the case so I could replace it in the same position.
I looked through my photo archive for images of the position of the gear in the hopes that it would help you reposition yours, but I found that I didn't take any pictures of that stage of the work. Perhaps someone else can post up a photo of the gear in place.
I did find a picture of the caked-up, dried-out white lithium grease on the inside of the damper motor, which I think may have been the cause of the "Damper Motor Active Too Long" code I was getting. I cleaned out all the old grease and applied a light coat of fresh white lithium grease.

I *think* it might have been a dried grease issue.

I finally got around to checking the motor again after getting no heat to the feet AND none to the defrost.

After getting in, I found that the motor had gotten itself unplugged. I must not have gotten the plug clips securely latched...

Anyhow, I pulled the codes, deleted the codes, then reset the ECC... and it came up 1-1-1.

Since it was getting late, I decided that was a good place to stop working on the car for the night.
