Re: Dashboard Mount Repair - Version 2.0
Has anyone identified the plastic type of Volvo 850 dashboard? If yes, how did you identify it?

It will have all kinds of recycle labels on it. I think it is ABS, but I don't have time to pull it this week

I seem to recall a bunch of codes that were molded into the main duct. I have no earthly idea what the codes mean. Knowing Volvo, it likely isn't standard ABS since I don't think is in keeping with their Gaia obsession.

Ok. I will be ready to instal the dashboard soon and I have a question about dashboard placement.
There is a metal lip right above the wire bundle (see picture). Does the front edge of the dashboard go under the metal lip or above it?
When the dashboard is installed, what is the expected clearance between the winshield and the front edge of the dashboard?

Ozark, I am looking at your repair and I see that you added aluminum sheet thickness to the front of each mount. You probably added over 3/16in, maybe evern 1/8th in thickness to the front of the mounts because the aluminum reinforcements are not perfectly adjacent to the mount surfaces.. How did your dashboard fit? Was there a noticeable gap between the windshield and the dashboard? I am deciding whether or not add any thickness to the front of the mounts because I am worried about the fit and about introducing new and additional stresses to the dashboard since any other than original mount alignment will force the plastic to bend to accomodate shifted contact points when all bolts are tightened.

Can anyone look in their car and tell me if the front of the dash goes above or below that firewall/metal lip (right above the wire bundle) on pic that I posted above. Thank you

If it went underneath you would certainly have a sun bleach mark on the plastic after 18 years. I'm pretty sure the plastic lies on top if the metal strip. Felt tape there might help stop squeaking but make it thin as possible.
