Sorry to hear about this mess.
You had a timing belt done, did they replace the tensioners?
Have they charged you for the tensioners? And are they recommended to be done at a timing belt change?
If so they would be 100% liable if you have had a component part that has been changed by them.
You should think of getting an engineer’s report done by a third party.
They are trying to pull the wool over your eyes and baffle you with rubbish.
You need to find out the cause and that will help immensely.
Get Volvo US involved they don't like this kind of thing.
Goodluck to you.
Tam.

I guess give them a call and explain to them the situation. They will probably ask you for proof of the repair done previously so make sure you have that ready. I am not sure how it works but I'm guessing they will contact the dealership to get their side of the story.
Hopefully it works out.
Worst case scenario, I would find a used engine, and take it to another shop and get it fixed there for cheaper. The good thing about these cars is that from 2003 onwards, is pretty much the same shape and design, so putting another engine in it and driving it for many more years makes a lot of sense, and is going to be cheaper than buying anything else.

Dealership just call to answer my question about the engine jumping time, but not at the timing belt. They said loss of cylinder compression (failure) caused the engine to jump time. That doesn't make since to me. How can lack of compression ruin timing. Isn't it the other way around timing effect compression eventually? I'm waiting on the managers' manager to call me now

Indeed, such explanation is not logical. Maybe contact Volvo US directly, or a different Volvo dealer in your area.

There is a disconnect between the S.A. and you.
The techs should know what is going on (the cause behind this), but the S.A sugar-coats this.
Get a 2nd opinion (send another inspector to the dealer to look at the engine mess) and move on.

1. Start looking for a lawyer specializing in car repair. Ask the lawyer for recommended second opinion certified Volvo car mechanic.
2. Take that mechanic to the dealer on a surprise visit. They cannot know your intentions or they will cover up things.
3. Ask for all parts removed from the car. Get all parts VIDEO FILMED for evidence and visually inspect them.
4. Video film everything. All conversations when you are at the dealership.
The crank pulley could not slip from the splines. That is IMPOSSIBLE. Tell them to show you that crank pulley. Video film it and photograph it in detail.
Once you gather all evidence file a lawsuit.
I am not sure if contacting Volvo USA will help with anything. They will work hard to make up stories to defend themselves and make everything ambiguous to go nowhere in court.
This is exactly why I do all repairs myself. I DONT TRUST ANYONE. It ends up being a bigger problem. Everyone is selfish and just wants your money and move on to the next customer. How do know if they installed a brand new tensioner? You will never know it. The tech could have taken it for his own car and given you his old one.

Our OP has been through a lot of s**t since October 23.
There is little-to-no initiative on either side to resolve it (cn90 says it).
Car is not drivable, it is sitting with he-said-and-she-said.
Max award will not exceed $500-1000 (price of used engine), if any. Judge Judy may work.
OP is on loaner from dealership (goodwill points).
I bet, OP's auto insurance is minimal, and any moving violation on record will get OP more grief.
I agree with Redneck. Let us stop for a minute Mavericks, and ask what does OP wants?
Help OP get out of this situation not burden OP any further.

The value of the XC90 is in that grey zone where additional time/expense may result in a net loss.

No. You will sue for a new engine, legal expenses and other unspecified punitive damages.
If done right you will come out well ahead.
Do nothing, do not stand up for yourself and you will get a call from the dealership to either:
1. Pay for a new engine
or:
1. Remove your car, pay for our inspection related work ($1000 or more).
2. Return our loaner
If not, WE ARE TAKING YOU TO collections and to COURT if you don't pay.
This is the direction the issue is headed right now.
This is how things work in a real world. Very often when it gets close to filing lawsuits, there are other offers and things get worked out in a way they wouldn't have otherwise.
What is OP? can you use full words instead of acronyms?
