2006 xc90 dealer says engine seized

Post by herbakis »

Hi, everyone first post. I have an 2006 xc90 2.5l with 198k miles. Back in May I had the timing done by the dealership. After $2200 all was well. So last week my check engine light comes on. Code p0016 cam position sensor. I replace the sensor, code still there. I clean my vvt solenoids installed new gaskets, code still there. Engine still runs. On my way to the dealership for them to check the code, car stops running. Engine cranks just won't start back up (seem like no gas). Dealer investigates and says my engine is seized. I asked how did they come to this diagnosis. The mechanic looked through the spark plug hole. Okay.

So after the service rep. talked to the mechanic come to find out what really happened. The crankshaft has slipped. I understand that the this could damage the engine but would it be considered seized and non repairable? Are they just not wanting to cover their warranty.

As of now I'm waiting on the shop manger to review/decide what going on.

Any sugestion or ideals of whats wrong?

The Timing Belt mechanical tensioner may have given up.
When they did the Timing Belt job, EXACTLY what was replaced?

There was one isolated incident posted here about a car (could have been a P2 series if memory serves me correctly) whose crankshaft slipped on the crank pulley. Very unusual and caused by isolated corrosion.

They replaced the tensioner, belt, pully, cam seals, and crank seal.

Just left the dealership service rep. said that they, re going to go little further into the engine to determine if what has happened fall under the warranty.

Update: dealership hasn't told me anything. So here's my run down of events so far.
Oct.17: had car towed to dealership
Oct.20 rented a car from enterprise ( no loaner available)
Oct.23: call from dealership saying engine seized, then engine not seized crankshaft slipped.
Oct.24: Went up there to check on my car they said they were looking into what happened to determine warranty.
Give them to 27th or 28th and they will call to let me know. (No Call came)
Oct. 29 Me and my wife went back up there. Same run around " we're working on it, the valves may be bent, top mechanic is on the job."
So after this I asked to see my car, five minutes of searching for my keys. Come to find out my car is 3 lots over with the timing belt removed sitting on the front seat. Engine hasn't been touched. I was furious.
I asked for a loaner since I'm paying for a rental and they're not even looking at my car. Rep. said none available. They would try to get me in one today. So as we were walking out, ran into the sales guy who sold us my wife's car (s60). Explained the situation and he went to the Rep and said you got a loaner the Rep said yes. I'm boiling at this point the guy just lied to my face. But I didn't explode, just took the loaner.
Oct.30: received a call they're pulling my car in and going to begin tearing into the engine to find the problem.
November 3rd still no call from the dealership. ...be patient and enjoy the loaner or call tomorrow and rip someone a new one???

We'll here's another update; if its doing any good since no one has any more inpput.
I called the the dealership today, man they really have poor customer service. anyways
Rep. said they had a hard time taking the spindle off. No ideal of what that means? Maybe he's talking about the crankshaft pulley since he said it slipped? They did a compression test and two of the cylinders were low. No leak test though. So again their saying they're goig to take the head off to check for bent valves. I dont understand why they haven't pulled the head to checked the valves? (remember my car's been there since October 17)
The statements about checking valves and getting to the root cause is getting real tiring.

1. Can anyone say what spindle they could be talking about?
2. Is it really that hard to determine the root cause of an engine stoping with a code of P0016 (cam positon sensor) Bank 1?

Ask for a written synopsis of condition, actions taken, maybe the dealership is negotiating with Big Volvo to cover repair (or dodge responsibility). Ask for plan of evaluation, repair probabilities, and a timeline. If they are not talking with corporate Volvo, maybe you need to be.

Good luck, we're all watching, sorry if we can't all give advice :|

P.S. drive it like ya stole it
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
