I also gave the seller feedback and they claim that the core is rinsed overseas and again when they get them. If so, whatever type of rinse they are using would not appear particularly effective.

They did offer to refund/replace the core as well, but there's no way I'm taking it out unless it fails prematurely.

Don't really know what a replacement from the same people is going to do.
I'd just deal with the smell until it goes away. Not bad enough to go through replacing it again.

I left the new Estonia core running at highest output for 2 hrs yesterday with sunroof open to get rid of the smell because I forgot to wash it Seems much better.

UPDATE -- Nearly two months later and the Estonian core is still stinking away. Functions fine as a heater and doubles as an asphyxiator -- such value. The stench is really bad.

Interesting. I believe these things have varying amounts of oil on them. The one for the S70 didn't seem at all oily, and after cleaning and install, it did not smell. I noticed the one I just put in the wagon about a month ago was more oily and harder to dissolve it in detergent. It did smell on startup for a few minutes for the first couple of weeks--smell is gone now.

Perhaps bottom line is, if it feels oily when you get it, run it through the dishwasher. If it still feels the least bit oily, do it again.

The smell is gone for me by now. I didn't follow any particular procedure to get rid of it, but it's probably been one or two thousand wintry miles since installation and the smell is gone.

Wish I had checked here earlier as mine stinks a bit as soon as I turn the heat on but does go away within few seconds Is there any trick without removing it or just live with it?
