Re: Replacing rotors

Post by C@lvin »

The Chinese Brembos have a terrible reputation if you are replacing the rotors.
Lee, are all Bembos "Chinese"? How can I tell?

After all my stress and agony over choosing rotors (see last week's post) I finally decided to order the Ate from FCP. They didn't have Ate in stock for the rear (even though the web site said they did) and they substituted Brembo's (without consulting me :x ) in the shipment.

When I complained they said I could return the Brembo's but the Sales Manager said that he didn't think they will be continueing to carry the Ate brand rotors. He and another sales associate repeatedly reassured me that Brembo's are great rotors, top quality, etc.

I am trying to decide whether to go to the trouble of installing the Brembo's or send them back and find something else for the rear. After hearing more than one person talk about problems they had with the Brembos, I'd just about be more inclined to use AutoZone Duralast rotors. I think they must be made in China too, but at least with AutoZone I can drive down the street and complain face to face in order seek satisfaction if something goes wrong.

It should say right on the box they came in. I would return them. I am a victim of the Brembo rotors thinking they were a great brand. They do have great products but not the Chinese rotors unfortunately.

Tim, yours was one of the posts I have read about woes with Brembo rotors. Per your suggestion, I openned up the shipment and the Brembo box says "Made in Italy" (Rear Rotors). Interestingly enough, the Ate box also says "Made in Italy" (Front Rotors).

Based upon that, I guess I'll keep the Brembos...... :)

Cool! Good to hear. Maybe only the front Brembo's are made in China. Please report back on your experience with them after you have run them for awhile.

I am getting ready to replace the rear pads and rotors on a '97 855 GLT. I saw that the PDF file at the top recommends changing the bolts that hold the rear calipers in place. I can't find the parts at FCP / IPD / EEuro / the other sources. Any idea what part number these bolts are and how much the dealer is going to ask for them? Thanks!

I have re-used the rear caliper bolts with no problems at all. They actually get torqued to spec. The bolts that I replace are the ones that get angle torqued for the final value.

The last set of factory Volvo rotors I bought came with replacement bolts for the calipers.

Considering tackling the task of replacing brake pads. This will be my first mechanical venture. Is this something that can be done in 4-5 hours for a novice with manuals and help from the forum??

Thanks

For just pads it takes longer to jack the car up and get the wheels off the ground than it does to replace the pads themselves. If you run into trouble the board is heavily populated and you can get an answer to any question fairly quick. We can walk you through this one with ease.

+1 This is a great project for a first time DIY. Are you doing all 4 corners?
