Right, finally got round to checking this.
I took the front wheels off.
I could not read a minimum thickness anywhere on the rotor outer surface or maybe it was rusted over on the top edge?
They are standard OEM rotors though as the car was only ever repaired at Volvo.
What is the as new thickness & minimum thickness of OEM rotors and how long would it take to reach the minimum from current thickness?
I'm thinking only the pads need to be replaced here and the garage just quoted for rotors as well but then if that 1-2m will wear down quickly then I would save on the labor by doing it now.
Front right:
I took 4 measurements with the calipers, all slightly different. Rather than uneven wear, I think it's just the caliper.
Average rotor thickness 24.74mm (absolute lowest reading was 24.62mm)
Pads need doing as they are squeaking but look to have a bit left.
There is a little ding in the outer edge of the disc on the bottom in these pictures - anything to worry about?

Instead of replacing the pads because of squeaking, just switch the left and right rotors so they turn the other way. Give rotor in pic#4 a good sand near the center lip

The rotors is what I'm concerned about as I'm not sure they are near done yet but I can't find the spec printed on the rotor - anyone know the factory specs for a 2004 v70?

My 2005 P2 lists the rotor specs as
305mm diameter
28 mm new
25 mm wear limit
25.8 mm limit when replacing pads.
Time for new ones qwerty jj!!!

Managed to sandpaper off some of the rust. They are min thickness 23mm, 280mm rotors.
BSB3A 3W718.
So, at 24.5 to 24.9mm thickness now, how long will they take to get down to 23mm.
Another set of pads at least?
And so the new pads will just work with the old rotors..no need to clean the rotors?

they are more than half worn. I'd say they've probably already seen 2 sets of pads.
If you're paying for the labor I would replace them.
If I were doing it myself I'd swap pads knowing that I would end up replacing rotors and pads early when the rotors warp because they're thin.
They do need cleaned up if you're going to reuse them. Some brake clean and a scotchbrite pad will do it.

Would new pads last another 1.5mm on the rotors? in which case they can have a full brake job next time?
By cleaning, you mean just the rust or resurfacing?
Seems a waste to replace them if they still have 50% value.

You seem quite determined to do this as cheaply as possible, so just toss some pads at it and see what happens.
Really though you should just do your own brakes and not pay the labor at a shop, then you can afford to replace all the wear parts and not deal with it for a long time.
you'll find very quickly that these are not cheap cars to own unless you do your own work. You can do new rotors/pads/hardware with premium quality parts for less than $200. you already got the wheels off, you need nothing more than some basic hand tools and a big pair of channel locks or a c clamp to do the job.

According to my Haynes P2 manual the 286 mm diameter rotors are 26.0 mm thick when new; 23.0 wear limit. So at 24.5 you are at half life. Inspect the surfaces. If they are smooth, not grooved, and don't have any warping, then you could expect to replace them next time around if you use pads with similar composition/hardness as the ones you are replacing.qwertyjjj wrote:Managed to sandpaper off some of the rust.
