Oil will go dark pretty quickly , don’t worry about that. The oil filter will catch the particles that matter, the fine stuff that looks black is too small to matter. If the owner went long on oil intervals you will be rinsing sludge out for a few oil Changes.

Today I got oil and coolant drained. I have the air intake, fuel rail, intake manifold and timing belt off. I have my intake and exhaust cams marked and all the head bolts off. Need to order new solenoid gaskets.

Ty..are you taking off the valve cover for some reason? It seals with no gasket so you don’t want to move those M6 bolts unless it’s coming off. You need permatex anaerobic sealer and 5 new spark plug o rings if it leaks.

Dual VVT...COOL. read up on resetting valve timing carefully , you have plenty of tolerance +-4 teeth for damage but only one tooth tolerance to an engine code

Good info. If im honest I have no clue how to fully remove the head. I watched someone on an older model but it isn't the same. And I don't see anything on how to remove the whole head so im just diving in. I have the intake and exhaust marked very carefully to put back together exactly how it was removed but I will take a look at resetting valve timing. Thank you

I believe there is special procedures to remove the cam cover on volvos. Special as in if you don't follow them , you can crack the cam cover.

It has to to do with making sure there isn't too much pressure on one part of the cover. I think this is something to just dive into.

I am relieving the pressure on it by doing my bolts in sequence. I did see that in a video. But other than that I have no instruction. I'm still learning and need to keep working on fixing this. If I mess something up I will learn from my mistakes but the shop wants over a grand to fix and I only bought the car for 2 so I don't have an option. Its also fun, I keep learning new things and would like to be able to do all my own repairs. I have so far

Ok, but please be aware, that one of the reasons for the caution is that the cam cover is machined to match the engine. So if you accidentally break it, it will be near impossible to find another that will just bolt on and work with your block.

The volvo cam cover isn't like a regular valve cover like most cars. but it seems you know that already as you are taking the extra steps of relieving pressure gently. Just wanted to put the warning out there before it was too late.

I actually did not know that I was just being careful. But thank you for the advice. I actually relieved them from inner to Outer doing a two step process, by first breaking the seal on each one and then screwing them the rest of the way out. You could actually hear each one pop as the pressure relieved when I broke the seals. I think there would have to be a lot more pressure than there was for something to break. All the bolts came out very easy

Could I actually asked you for a little bit of instruction as to what my next steps would be in this process. This is where I am. The Intake manifold is just hanging on by that banjo bolt. And I assume that thermostat has to come off

I will try to remember to post ViDA instructions today/tomorrow sometime. If you plan to remove your VVT’s for cam seal replacement I can loan you my cam locking tool. I assume you lined up your timing marks prior to removing the belt.
