We are in a hurricane! In western Montana! Dumping rain. The remnants are starting to pass right over here. My first, very exciting. Not at all like you see on tv. Although there's a Weather Channel Parka Boy (tm) out here shouting into a microphone, leaning into the wind....but there isn't any wind.

Last week (before the storm) I installed some shade! Made a real difference in temp in our courtyard, the whole NE corner is in shade. Kinda fun! I was going to figure out all the math to making the curves and the cable tension and all that, but here was this thing available for a bit over $100 - who's gonna make one from scratch for that? Right triangle, 15' x 22'.

Thank you! 1947. The architect built it for he and his wife and he lived in it until he was 85-ish.

He was obviously ahead of the curve. Looks prairie style. Reminds me of one of Wright's Usonian homes.

I really like the Usonians - small, simple, clean lines, good proportions, nice light.
This is a series of 1 1/2 in 12 sheds In a long thin house with a U shaped courtyard. Little BRs, nice open LR / DR on that glass courtyard. Kitchen with a curved sitting counter. Rarely need lights on in the daytime. LR shed is solar - no sun in the summer, sun 2/3 of the way across the room in winter. It’s so fun to live here. It was a lucky find.

The house is attractive and I like the shade/sail too.

In central Oklahoma we will occasionally get the remnants rain of a hurricane. Generally we are glad to get the rain, but it happens very rarely. Mostly the path goes further East.

So with that pitch, I'm guessing the roof is a torch-down / hot mop gravel ? I built my territorial / Santa Fe, and it has that low pitch as well, but I thought you'd need a bit more where you're at. I've found flat roofs can have issues, particularly with snow.BlackBart wrote: ↑22 Aug 2023, 09:34 I really like the Usonians - small, simple, clean lines, good proportions, nice light.

I also like the metal, at it's lowest approved pitch, on your style of home.
Nice find for sure !

It's 1 1/2 and 2/12 in some planes. Almost too low for metal, although you can have them make panels full length now.
It's a brand new GAF 60-mil TPO membrane. Glue-down was more expensive and shoved the schedule way back, I was on their list for two years as it was. So we did the big (4"+) flat washers that hold the smooth underlayment sheets down, and then a fancy electromagnetic gadget is moved around the roof and bonds the membrane to those washers. They bring their own generator rig to run it. The washers don't show at all, it's pretty smooth. I'd do a white membrane normally for heat reflection, but these roof planes show from the street, so I went with a dark bronze that fits the house. Compromise.
As they stripped the roofing off (it was mopped asphalt), a builder friend and I peeled the entire roof 1x8 sheathing off the rafters (ceiling plaster is right on the underside of the rafters), pulled out all the 1940's Weyerhaeuser sawdust and bark insulation (4", woo!). I think Weyerhaeuser figured out how to sell everything on the tree to us schlubs instead of burning it. I had an insulator follow us with polyurethane spray insulation as deep as we could, and used pink batt in a hollow area above the flat DR ceiling. It's all brilliantly vented from original, air just flows through.
Then I had to unstack and find all the numbered planks to put back down, 2000 sf worth. Somehow the numbers didn't always line up right. Replaced some beat up planks. I used 7000 gun nails and a bunch of screws. Rebuilt an area of soft overhang that was sagging, sistered new rafters and cut out the bad. I was Mr Carpenter for two weeks! The roofers came in behind me and laid the 1/4" fiberglass sheeting down and rolled out the membrane. They didn't want to use my cool old beveled metal roof edge / fascia trim as their membrane doesn't bond to it, so they made all new, in the right color.
All that and the insurance company won't bundle with car insurance, because it's a "commercial roof."
