Man - I was thinking it was the 2.9, after going back I now see it is the 2.5T.
I just did a head gasket on one of these for a friend, but have no pictures of the piston positions either.
I approached it the same way, but started with the Crank at the mark and the engine was correctly timed. I didn't lock the crank via the starter hole.
Were it me, and the Crank is currently at the mark I would not fear valve to piston contact if the cam lock grooves on the back are close.
If they are way off I would approach it exactly like you mentioned above, using the stick/straw and flash light method to figure out where the pistons are sitting relative before starting.
If the timing belt is off then no need to worry about being 180 degrees off - the cam lock tools should do this as I understand it - they will not fit if upside down (meaning 180 degrees off).
