Re: DIY: 1998 V70 REAR Cam Seals using SKF 11809!

Post by xHeart »

Both rear cam seals were replaced some 15,000 miles ago.

The engine is a dry, and drip free. But the dipstick shows close to a quart of motor oil missing at each oil change. Is it normal for engine with 140,000 miles to burn away a quart each 3000 miles?

The oil and filter change happens every 4-month with MANN/Pennzoil 5W/30.

xHeart,

My 1998 S70 GLT burns 1 qt/1000 miles. So you are good at 1qt/3000 miles.

All this talk of rear cam seals front cam seals and Pcv replacement got me all worked up and I ordered parts from the folks at IPD. Am I reading all these post correctly, there are two front and rear cam seals? For a total of FOUR? And I have found videos on replacing the rear but video for replacing the front is something I haven't found. RSPI do you have video of this? I subscribe to your channel but haven't seen anything. PCV yes.

I actually do not. Most of my videos are produced from actual repairs and since I'm a DIY guy that hussles odd jobs to try to keep my head above waters I don't do unnecessary repairs on cars. I also do not believe in replacing engine seals as preventative maintenance. Some cars go 300,000+ miles without having these seals leak. I also do not recommended people purchase those expensive timing belt kits with those seals included.

In my pre-video days I did replace a pair of front cam seals on my daughters S70 and did a written tutorial but no video yet. I believe these seals can last forever if you keep the PCV serviced.

The way I did it was to scribe multiple marks in the cam / can sprocket mating point in the center of the post that the sprocket slides on, prior to loosening the bolts. You could also lock the cams from the back of the head.

Unfortunately I have a bad PCV system which has caused the seals to fail. I am changing these out this weekend, well I thought I was but I may need two more seals as I didn't realize there are a total of four. I mean based in what I'm reading in these posts. I'm fairly handy and have been working in this V70 since I bought it a year ago. I've been working on getting it to stage 0 thanks to the knowledge that I've gained from this forum and videos produced by guys in here.

Yes, 4 seals total.
FRONT: Intake 1, Exhaust 1.
REAR: Intake 1, Exhaust 1.

FRONT Cam seals DIY is difficult, read this thread below for tricks:

I have noticed that both the IPD tutorial on youtube, and also on this forum, neither have a picture of the cam without the seal! So I am including a picture of how mine looked. I was worried with the holes in the cam, but was assured this was "normal" by a local Volvo guy.

This is what my cams look like after I removed seal (one sheet metal screw was enough to pull out)

Crank sensor side

again, this is what it looks like with seals taken OUT

SKF 11809 does not exist anymore at NAPA. They have another one that is "almost the same" but the OD is "off" by a fraction (9$ each). I will give it a shot and check back. Otherwise, the IPD one sells for much less, like 4 bucks, and it says Elring but is stamped "Cortico"

I used Elring front seals on wife's 850 and it blew out (very loose fit) and lost most of it's oil almost resulting in engine failure.

It was part of an FCP timing kit.

Great writeup as usual, CN! I just finished this job a little bit ago using the SKF seals from eBay. Not hard at all, but with the screws I had on hand, it was a little bit of a pain to get them into the seal.
My solution to this was to use a straight pick tool (http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-pi ... 66836.html) and lightly hammer it in to make a hole in the seal, then go in with another pick that was slightly curved (second one in the picture on HFT website) and pull out the seal. After losing two screws somewhere in the depths of my engine bay, this was MUCH easier. Plus, you don't have to worry about the screw slipping and damaging the head or the end of the camshaft.
I found it odd that the new seals seemed to go on fairly easily after reading about using a 1/4 in. ratchet extension or a large socket to press them in. I oiled the inside and outside edges, per the iPd video, and they slid on with little effort. I'll keep an eye on my oil level, but so far so good.
