What happens if you over fill when you do the flush?
Tried this, had great and noticable effect and drove for 200miles after, but I believe I over filled by quite a bit...

It will push out the dipstick tube and make quite a mess...besides that, it could be a fire hazard. I read this on another forum: "When they are overfilled cold, and then run to normal operating temperatures, the fluid expands and can run out the filler tube or dipstick tube. In this case (a truck that was under investigation by an insurance company for catching fire) it dripped down onto the very hot catalytic converter, and then caught fire." I've also read this on yet another forum but never had confirmation: "A tranny depends upon pressure against one side of myriad valves and parts with no fluid and/or fluid pressure against the other side to properly move and apply proper pressure."

At any rate, don't know how similar our transmissions are to the above, but I wouldn't want to take any chances.

In your case, if you did over-fill, either take the plug out from below for just a few seconds (a messy hand will be all you experience) or use some tubing and suck some out of the dipstick hole. You can always add some back later if you take to much out.

Thanks for all your help. The flush went fairly smoothly and I was quite proud of myself after completing the job!

A couple things I might add (for an '02 s60):

Another tool you will need (and this is probably a 'no-duh' to you guys) is a 12mm socket to remove the skid plate to gain access to the tranny plug.

Also, 3/4" OD may be too small to recieve the fluid out of the radiator. The tube I got (from a gardening store) was 3/4" inside diameter and was still very difficult to stretch around the pipe. I had to cut a little slit in it to make it fit.

I went to start the flush and noticed my 2000 V70 has the green clips on the trans hoses at the cooler/rad. does this mean I have the reverse flow direction as with the P2's? Is there a way to tell without pulling the hose and starting the engine?

Thanks,
Chris
FYI, I have a 2000 S70 and just sucessfully completed MadeinJapan flush method--everything worked as described--thanks for making it easy for us part time mechanics. Mine had a green clip on tranny hose also, and fluid flushes out of the hose as described (i.e. attach the 1/2" inside diameter hose over hose you remove).

If anyone gets to the end of this thread by some chance and are not aware that pictures were added recently with the original write-up (lost in the transfer to the new site), go back to page 1 and check it out.

I've been using Valvoline ATF for the last 60,000 miles...I flush every 30,000. I think unless you are towing or putting some other real demands on the tranny a cheaper (but good quality) fluid is just fine, along with a periodic flush routine.

Just my opinion.
