Woo hoo! Its running fine and no leaks (water pump), which would have presented themselves by now right?? I gave it a good road test awhile ago. I have to tell you the instructions for the particular type tensioner I have were key! Couldn't have done it without.

Thanks again.

I just did my timing belt today. Took about 6 hours, but that included stopping twice to make runs to get tools I didn't have. So probably 4 1/2 hours with not being in a hurry.
The one thing that took the biggest chunk of time was getting the belt off the bottom. I struggled and struggled. And then it just popped right out.
Thanx to all the people here that post the howto's and links to other sites about these type jobs.
Now I have to break down and do the odometer fix. Have the parts, but have been too lazy to tear the dash apart.

Next time just get a pair of tin snips and cut the old one in half. Save the fight for getting the new one threaded back on

I started to cut it, but had already decided I was going to get it out without doing that
I had the new one in in about 10 minutes. Didn't have any real trouble putting it back together.

Cant I just make my marks with white paint or chalk for the bottom and tops and have them in that same position when installing the new belt? Do I have to be on TDC? The reason I am asking is I have done a few american cars (and come to think of it, my Toyota) and I havent had any troubles. Also, can anyone recommend the best place to get a replacement belt? My second one was replaced at a now-defunct volvo dealer (oddly enough though - they wrote it wasnt due for a change until 191,000 kms, which would be 117 kms and the sticker syas EVERY 75000. Thanx all!

Why not just turn the engine over, like the instructions say? A 30mm socket will do the job.
If anything should happen to move while you are doing it, it will be a lot easier to find the real marks instead of hoping you didn't make a mistake while marking stuff.
You already have to get to the bottom of the engine around the crank.
I just did mine yesterday and didn't have the socket, so I made a trip to Northern Supply. It was $6.00 and change.
