Re: Rear End Suspension Link Replacement

A huge difference in price.
It is in my to-do list before the snow? Would Febi take the urban driving long enough?

1- At what mileage does your Support Arm Link go bad?

2- Which brand?
---> Volvo $165
---> Lemforder $124 (FCP Euro)
---> Febi-Bilstein $35

Lemförder is OEM. Would Febi a good replacement for proper fitment and material?

As far as the jack stand placement goes I think I put them directly in front of, and inward from the anchor points. It has been several years and many repairs ago - memories fade.

As far as parts I actually used Scan Tech and, to my amazement, they have lasted for well over 100k miles. Febi-Bilstien is a great brand but the price actually scares me. Is everyone sure the quoted price is for the end link and not the bushing?

1997 Volvo 850 NA -
I am starting to feel the rear throws off making a left, or taking a ramp and accelerating, strange sensation. Clueless.

The four tires are Dunlop Signature II (with close to 6000 miles on it), all OE/OEM suspensions parts were replaced a year ago. All engine mounts and torque rod were replaced in past 18 month.

I am planning on replacing four subframe bushing, two delta links, and the one front and one rear engine pad after the thanksgiving. Subframe bushing is OE, engine pads OEM, delta link Febi.

How do I sequence this repair? What else while it is on 4 jack-stand?

Many thanks.

Delta link bushing replacement was pretty straight forward with the Volvo tool. Some sort of two-armed press for removing the bolt that holds the link in the trailing arm is recommended.

xheart - take a good look at the transverse arm bushings before you start this repair, as the time to replace those (if needed) would be during the delta link bushing replacement. Also, a good time to replace the brake line that is on top of the transverse arms.

I believe there is a write on brake line by cn90, where?

Would the balljoint separator work for removing the bolts, something like this http://superturbodiesel.com/benz/boostnbenz.1baddsm.com/DIY/FrontSuspension/balljoint/tool.jpg. I could rent it from the local Azone.

Who is OEM for the transverse arm bushing?

That ball joint separator may work. The tool needs to have he ability to open about 4", and you will have very limited clearance on top of the delta arm. That bolt can be removed by knocking it out from below as many of the step by step instructions suggest (the 5 pound copper mallet), but if you can find a press that works, you will have a much easier time of it. The local autozone sold a tool that looked as if it would work, but they did not offer that particular tool as a rental. I borrowed a tool that looked very much like the one pictured in your linked photo, but there was not enough clearance on the top of the delta arm for the top of the tool to fit into that space. I ended up buying a kit of three two-armed presses from HF, and the largest of the ones in the kit is what worked for me.
I would assume that the oem provider for the transverse arm bushings would be Lemforder as with many of the suspension parts, there is an internet seller offering Alvo? brand bushings that they claim are an improved version of that bushing.
I have a brand new Volvo tool for the link removal that I will be selling soon. I also have a great write-up on the whole process (delta link and transverse am bushing replacement), but I only seem to have a hard copy with the digital information somehow misplaced.
I found that keeping the right side delta arm blocked down from the body-pin so that the delta link could be removed and replaced was difficult, as the wood blocks wanted to keep shifting.
Good luck.

I found this MVS parmlind's post that makes use of balljoint separator viewtopic.php?f=7&t=46417&start=28.
