Yeah, it dropped to around 24.5 mpg. I haven't had enough miles on the bare roof recently, as I've had my other rack with the bike carriers on it. Had I stayed at 70-ish, it might've been better, but we were moving 75-80-ish, which also gains another mileage penalty.

I'll probably grab a fairing for this set-up, but by other (older) Thule one probably wouldn't clear the box.

We have 2 small children, which add a bit of extra crap to drag around. Even with the wagon, we needed the box (I don't fill the back of the car over the rear seat rests for long trips).

We were actually in a rush. We had originally left for the trip in my wife's car with this on it, but it dropped the #2 ignition circuit out of the COP conversion, about 30-40 minutes into the trip. Went home thought I fixed it, but it played up again, so we just unloaded her car and loaded mine and got on the road ( about 5-6 hours late...). After a bit of Tertris, all of the same luggage made its way into/onto the sedan.

I think the issue was a botched ECU conversion on my part, as the conversion on my car has been going strong for the past year, and didn't miss a beat on the trip. The car ran fine for the past couple hundred miles and was running great on the start of the trip, and then just dropped #2 while we were sitting idling through construction delays. (I felt it drop...which was followed by my mood).

I had the privilege to rebuild the wooden coach for a 1932 Rolls Royce Goshawk many years ago. Hence the 35mm pics in my outdated photo album. Aluminum body nailed with thousands of little brads to a oak frame. I'm probably one of a few woodworkers whose work goes toddling down the highway

I'll post some more pics in the " Non Volvo " car thread for those interested.

But back to Volvo - I pulled a couple of N/A cams for my upcoming rebuild.

Phew, dodged a bullet on the XC90! I was pretty certain that the starter was dead after less than 2 years, which was pretty disappointing. It's a Carquest reman, so I wasn't too surprised, just annoyed. Lifetime warranty, but that doesn't make me feel much better in this instance if I have to do the job twice. I tried jumping it, thinking the battery finally crapped out. Nothing. Great, figured it was probably the starter given that it's a cheap reman part. I'm not used to newer cars that cut the relay off rather than at least weakly cranking, so I didn't think much of it.
Then I remembered how old the battery was... 3/2012 date code! It was at 12.2 volts, and that wasn't cutting it. That's when I realized that both now and the other day when I first tried to figure it out, my jump pack for whatever reason wouldn't switch on when I connected it. It showed around 12v, but it should still switch on when the battery voltage is over 12v. I'm just gonna order a JNC 660 finally. I'm tired of screwing around with cheap jump boxes!
Since it's buried in the back of my driveway behind an X5 whose exhaust is taken apart, I couldn't get anything close enough to jump it the old fashioned way either. At this point, my meter was showing 11.8V. Yup, it's done.
Ran to Walmart and grabbed a German-made H8 a little bit ago, started right up. 3/21 date code... much better!

My mom mentioned that it started a little weak a few times over the past few days, so it made sense. I'm glad I took the time to properly diagnose this before tearing it apart like I was ready to do, I would have been pissed if I replaced the starter and it still wouldn't crank. I've been too preoccupied by other projects needing to get done.

I've gotta say though, these Volvo batteries are incredible. What other brand is getting 9 years of reliable starts? I also had a 2014 date code in my S70 up until last year that was great, couldn't believe how long it lasted. I need to know who's making these ones!

OE batteries are incredible. Both my ManBeetle and my T4 are in their second batteries, being 2003 and 2002 cars, respectively.
