You want to get it down between the power and multi-connector cable and the the ABS pump. If you look at the 2nd picture in the attached link you can see a yellow piece of plastic. You want to jam it down the gap to the right of that so it pushes on the multi-connector pushing it outward, and also the power cable as well.

Hi Neil,

You mean to the right of that yellow disk, where that little silver thing is (green arrow points to it)?
Anywhere else?
Did you mean a second wedge for the power connector?

Also, what is that black case marked with the orange rectangle? Does that come off?

Thanks.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Yes that black thing does come off. It is the main connector for the ABS module. I am trying to recall, memory is poor!

Fortunately, Robert DIY has a video!

https://midwest-abs.com/installation-videos

This is kind of self explanatory. That black plug has a push in tang on the RH end. When you release that it rotates to the left as it is hinged on that side. It should be connected to 2 slder pins that move with it to the left, which in turn releases the main connector. Those 2 sliders sometimes break with old age, and you may have to help them to move to the left.

Robert explains how the power connector comes off, before going on to explain how to remove the ABS module.

To answer your other question, yes push something down where your green arrow is, and if necessary, also between the pump body and the power connector.

Thanks again Neil.
I guess you mean where the light blue arrow is in the updated drawing, between the two short light blue lines?

So that black box thing hinges up ?

That wasn't Robert DIY video that was the Midwest sight, or maybe it is on there?
Ok a search turned up the video, very nice.
I wonder if it would help to do something under the box, like some kind of spacer or something.

If you check at around 5.45 on the video about half way down the linked page, it is there.

It may be stiff as they are usually undisturbed for many years.

Hello Neil,

Oh yes that's a good video i watched it.

After watching it a thought comes to mind. I've seen this issue countless times with electrical connectors. What happens in those cases is the contacts themselves no longer make contact with the socket prongs, so you lose one or more connections.
What this would mean in terms of fixing it, it would mean unplugging the connector (both probably) and cleaning all the contacts both on the connector attached to the wires and the socket pins on the ABS unit.
This is an extremely common problem, so i wonder if this can sometimes be mistaken for bad solder.
What happens i think is the pins oxidize and probably warp a very small amount. This could cause some pins to lose their independence to movement which would not keep them connected.
So a try would be to unplug the connector, examine the contacts, clean them, then put it back and test.
I suppose the power connector could be done the same way.

I do have a little problem though. As you said the wires become stiff. That in itself could hamper the natural movement of the connector and cause tiny spaces to appear where oxidation can start.

The wires to the power connector are so stiff i wonder if they would break or something if i pulled on the connector.
What do you think?

The answer to the breaking is it can happen, but usually it is only the outer insulation that breaks up. Liquid tape is the answer to that.

Silicon spray may help to soften the covering and lube the connector to help it release.

As to your theory, it is possible, and it may happen in a few cases, but based on our combined experiences, I would suggest that is the less likely issue.

Hi Neil,

Yes, I was afraid you would say that. I'll find out eventually, I guess.
In the old days we used to buy Contact Cleaner spray made just for this purpose. Not sure if they even sell it anymore maybe I'll check just for the heck of it.

LATER:
Looks like they do, WD40 contact cleaner (not the regular WD40) about $8 USD per can.
They have other types too but I don't have any experience with these newer ones.
Also maybe of interest, they also have freeze spray you can spray on some part you think is bad due to overheating, and if the device works then you know it might be that part going bad or something else causing it to heat up.

Contact cleaner is still out there as you have seen. I use it anytime I have a connector apart. I clean with a toothbrush and cotton buds. I think the brand I used was CRC? I have also used Canadian Tire's own brand Motomaster. Thanks for the reminder, I am out of it.
