I would go with a used lower mileage engine with the timing belt/water pump/pulleys/tensioner replaced as cn90 mentioned.
take it to another shop where the labor rates are low.

Don't rebuild the engine, there are too many unknowns (piston condition, valves, valve seals etc. etc.).
Best is to:
1. Tow your car to the shop you trust. Best is a Volvo independent shop.
2. There are many used 2.5T (B5254T2) engines for sales.
- Look for a used engine with about 80K-100K miles, i see some on ebay etc.
- Search local junk yard and craigslist too.
- Don't buy an engine unless you know for sure what the mileage is. Best is to buy from car that was totaled from rear-end and/or side collision.
3. Before engine installation:
- Put in new TB and 2 pulleys (Volvo sells a kit for $120, use only Volvo parts).
- The Aisin water Pump should last 180K+, if you want to replace it at 100K, it is fine.
- Optional: intake and exhaust cam seals, but this job is tricky (VVT Hub), so unless one is familiar with it, don't touch the VVT.
4. The shop which procures the used engine should give you 12m/12K warranty.
PS: If you want a clean slate, then sell your car to junk yard for $500 or so.
- Remove parts you want to keep just in case you need it later (MAF etc.).
- Then look on ebay, craigslist, autotrader dot com, there are some 2004-2006 XC90 2.5T with 100K on sales for $7000-$8000 range.
I wonder if your insurance policy covers this engine failure from ? negligence.

Problems I think of with the used engines. 1. Can't find one with low miles. 100k not low enough miles for me. I drive about 35,000 to 40,000 a year.
2. With used; never know where the engine has been.
By the way this engine rebuild shop offers 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. About two weeks to complete the job.
What I'm I missing? Are their some hidden rules about rebuild vs used.

I would say 100k miles on a used engine is as good as new. Probably not going to find one with lower mileage.
I just checked car-part.com and they have several engine right that are below around 70-8-k miles on them. check it out. If it was my car, I would buy the used engine for what looks like around the $700 range for a good one, replace timing components, and get shop to swap it in and probably come out to around $2000-2500 all done.

Happy new years everyone,
Just left the dealership talking prices and some other things.
What do you think of this offer? A used 100k mile engine installed for $3200, 12mth 12k mile warranty. he also told me that if I had any parts that I could bring them up and the would place them on the engine while it was out. I believe at no charge! I was told to take the loaner home again and think on it call him tomorrow.
As I've stated early I drive 30 to 40k a year, will they throw in a 1 yr,30k labor warranty? or will I be asking for to much. I'm trying to be fair but after this long process of spending $2300 and getting a long run around of what caused my problem.( Seized engine, low compression making engine jump timing, crankshaft slipping, pulling off the head to check for bent valves) all this just to finally come to the fact that the crank pulley was worn. Dealer removed this pulley to replace crank seal; didn't notice the wear. I found this out last by the way. So $5500 in a matter of 7 months. So asking for a labor warranty is that to much?

I understand the rationale behind your number, and that their labor is all you want warranted for the full year's worth of mileage. It looks as though an incidence of their labor may have caused this whole scenario. They have worked you over pretty well on haggling, but you have not been without a car at their expense. Take a long-view approach, determine what relationship (if any) you want to "maintain" with the dealer and go from there.
If you accept a longer warranty through them, you are committing to a relationship, better or worse!

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

$3200 for 100k miles overhauled engine with new timing belt kit, wp, auxiliary items, all cam seal, main seal, coils, plugs, sensors , and all fluid flushed would take you another 100-200k miles. With total of $5500 for another safe 100k would amount to 5.5 cents a mile.herbakis wrote: ...

1yr/30k is reasonable for parts and labor.

FL XC90 the dealership has not offered the 1 year 30 k on labor I wanted to counter offer with this. I really don't know what to do.FLXC90 wrote:I understand the rationale behind your number, and that their labor is all you want warranted for the full year's worth of mileage.
