I doubt a volvo tech would even own a three lb hammer. I assume if the undercarriage is dropped some amount that wouldn't be necessary?
Of course not, it would be a 1.5 kG hammer by Thor....

Keep that car! It's a really nice one if I recall. But you said you would, only I couldn't agree more. You were do for a head gasket (sooner than later) anyway.

Actually I have seen that too. Not sure why it exists, good question?

I notice the IPD skid pan utilizes it for a mount. but the volvo one doesn't. I dont like to ruin the rust protection by cutting or bending it.

Ironically i put a new head gasket on it about 15k miles ago when I burned a few valves.

Here’s another question for y’all: is it possible to put a T5 turbo engine in place of the standard turbo? Just wondering, may want to do a little upgrade while I’m shopping for a used engine...

AFAIK, An NA, low-pressure turbo, and high-pressure turbo engines should fit in all P80 chassis. One of the pros of modular design. Just make sure you grab the right ECU.

none of the 2.4 or 2.5 t5 engines have the respect of the 2.3. they have More power stock but cant take any mods for performance with out blowing I think. all the cars you see on Nuerenburg speed day are 2.3 making 500 hp or more.

- Any high pressure turbo (HPT) engine 95-98 P80 drops right in. They are all the same engine, very very minor differences.
- HPT engines 99-06 get slightly little more tricky the newer you go, but have been done dozens of times and in stock form will work extremely well once fitted.

I'd look for a 95-98 HPT with low-ish miles, a good bet is a 98 T5. Use either turbo, the 16t from the 98 or the 15g from your 96, either will bolt right up and the ECU will not know the difference. But this is a good opportunity to drop in a 98 ECU, as well, to match the injectors on the 98 engine. Motronic 4.4 is a nice step up from Motronic 4.3; this is a seamless conversion.

If you stick with a 2.3 turbo, no problem with switching any turbo from another 2.3.
All the 2.3 turbos are: Bore 81 mm, Stroke 90 mm, Compression ratio 8.5:1.
Just make sure you get the ECU also so, that it will have the correct map for the turbo.
