My fuel filter got clogged three days ago, I managed to jumped the fuel pump relay to force gas into the engine to get home. Then I replaced the filter, but the engine still ran badly. After a shot runs to the bone yard and parts store I swear that heard a large "boom". I got home and the tailpipe had melted pieces of the catalytic converter coming out. Now the car is running a bit better with a blown cat, it even has a sweeter low rumbling exhaust sound.
Lesson learnt: Always beat the moisture in the tank by keeping at least 1/2 full. And don't jump the fuel relay too long.
Next step: Gut the cat, and add spacer to rear O2 sensor. (Sorry tree huggers, I just can't afford a new cat right now).

Wow. Do you think an actual explosion took place in the cat? Maybe it was really plugged up and got too hot.

Not an explosion explosion, but it was loud enough for me to pull over. The pieces I recovered look like a melted grey honeycomb.
