Do you mean pull the pin on the tensioner or pull the tensioner off the car?

It does pay to set everything to the not-TDC marks before doing any timing belt or water pump work

I'm talking about locking the cams in the front with plywood / zip-ties etc. I installed NA cams so I can't really lock them in back because of the difference in timing. I'm not taking the belt off, just moving it to the side enough to get the pump out.

Yeah, I would still recommend setting it to the marks. Keep in mind you'll also have to clean off the gasket from the pump, so you'll probably want the belt out of the way. Might not need to take it all the way off, but it's better to be safe and go ahead and set it to the alignment marks.

Since it never really ran, other than for 10 sec, and never got warm, I think the gasket will come right off. All the others have so far.

You don’t need to lock the cams on a non VVT CAR. Set the crank to the timing mark , take the belt off, remove water pump

Nasty business with water pipe

Check cam timing marks
Reinstall belt , two full revolutions of motor , check marks , pull the pin

Received an O-ring today, but won't have time to install till this weekend.
It would appear that the tapered end makes a world of difference. You can certainly see why the straight cut pipe would be hard to install and be pron to nicking the O-ring.

Looking at my pic, it looks like there is a small nick in the new O-ring, but it's just something with the pic.
Ring is in perfect condition.

Installation went beautifully !
I can say that the O-ring can be installed without pulling the water pump. As long as the end of the pipe is tapered. I also slipped the O-ring on the pipe and left it that way for a couple of days to help stretch it some. When I was ready to install, I took it off the pipe and popped it in the recess. I say popped because that's what it pretty much did. Fit the recess snugly all around, unlike the first O-ring.
A little lubricant, and the pipe slipped right in.
If the center mounting tab on the pipe had been flipped around 180*, then the pipe could be removed without taking off the exhaust manifold and turbo. Would have been a simple thing to do during design phase. That one bolt makes you have to pull all of that other stuff just to remove the pipe.

In defense of designers everywhere, it is much easier to draw with pencil or computer a bolt attachment, than it is to actually put in the bolt. Nearly 50 percent of designers have less than average experience.
