Changed my oil on a beautiful 55F fall day, new Mahle filter, Mobil 1.

Got on my knees and thanked my 1999T5 for still running me around reliably at 180k miles with two last kids in college. Two more years

I bet she will give you another 100k if you keep treating her right.

She could in your fine state but i will lose her to rust up here. In two years I would like to give her to someone who wants a T5 to nurture in reward for all she has done for the family.

Ok, it’s 5 years later and I’m still driving her. Now life and work has split me between Albany, Ithaca, and Stony Brook on Long Island so having an extra car or two has really paid off.

Some may guess where i am heading with low budget (alternators over my budget for now with +150eur), being behind of schedule and new rectifiers are not to be found locally but in next countries… so cant wait them to arrive as snow is coming very soon. Happily diodes i did find ‘locally’ to come next week so i can move the car. Hopefully.
All my positive diodes were exploded. Need still figure out how i get this to two pieces meanwhile.

Trying to follow (if in a minor way) our good friend Firefox and his major operation in helping a friend out with their old Volvo.
I am hoping it may give some more good karma points with the Volvo Gods as I clearly need them!

A young lady I know has a 98 V70 with only 150,000km on it. She has tried to become more independent in repairing her own car since the mechanic that introduced me to her moved away from Calgary to set up her own repair shop. She asked me to check out some issues in the past as she could not get over to fix stuff herself. She has taken the car to a couple of local general repair shops but they apparently cannot read the failure codes as it is a 98. I thought a general OBDII tester should be able to read some of the codes but maybe not things like the ABS and TCU perhaps?

Anyway they could not figure out why the ABS light was on, and now the TRACS light is on as well as the speedo has dropped out. Also there are issues with random operation of door actuators (again they didn't know why) and noises from the front end of the car (they replaced the tie-rod ends).

I contacted our great friend Matty Moo at Mid-West ABS to see if he had a re-built ABS module. Fortunately he did and gave a deal with a unit with slight casing damage (he gets them from owners who try to fix them themselves returned as 'good' cores). He sometimes re-builds these and re-seals them. He lists these on his web-site at a very good price.

Money is an issue so prices need to be kept to a minimum so I will see what we can do from the stash!

ABS module is now on the way. Owner is thrilled (hope the over phone diagnosis is correct) as she thought she may have to give up her much loved Volvo. Hopefully we can get this car back to a good safe working car as she has 2 young kids that she needs to ferry around.

I am hoping that the repair shops have not damaged the ABS sensors when working on the car. I will only be able to test those once I can get hold of the actual car. I will test them anyway for all the time it takes.

Plan is to replace the ABS module and then give the front end of the car an inspection to check out what is going on. From the description I am thinking worn bushes somewhere. The door lock issue is failing thermo-resistors in the front door actuators. I asked her if they are working better now it is cooler. She said yes, how did I know that (might be because the rear doors on the 'R' are doing the exact same thing and are on the thermo-resistor swap for copper wire plan over the winter).

Wasted 15 minutes of life making a nice jump harness to drain the fuel tank via pump on the donor, only to remember I harvested a big piece of harness for another project.

It has been a good year for the goof threads.

The Volvo Gods have delivered you the opportunity to escape your V70 R and replace it with:
A red 1999 V70 R... with a blown head gasket.
That car looks lovely in red and it's great to hear it's reportedly bone stock. Seems like a worthwhile restoration project for someone.

Same color as my 98 T5 I owned in Scotland. Knowing what I know now, I would keep the stick shift T5 over the 'R'!!

If only the head gasket was an issue, then it may be a reasonable buy. A replacement engine is probably cheaper and less work to fit.

Love the condition of those front seats!

Typical tailgate issues with loose top seal and windshield lower seal.

Lots of scrapes and dents on fenders as well.
