Solved nasty brake squeal on Grunhilde. Pulled left front, pulled pads, little but of cleanup on rotors, chamfered pad edges, lube caliper slides

Pulled right rear, pulled drum. Inboard brake pad stuck in rusty caliper. Freed up and lubed, reinstalled, adjusted parking brake.

Zip tied parking brake cables to trailingarms.

Investigated starting cranking problem. Getting 12 Volts to 86 on starter relay but no cranking. No ground to 85. Possible fault in relay terminal 87 to starter motor solenoid pin. Car does start remote terminal

Then again, I’d rather keep the matching black one that’s in there. Apparently all the replacements are gray, which is incredibly annoying. Especially for the R owners.

Well, it matches the hair of the OwneRs….back to you…. :D

Started prep for the front caliper bracket and brake dust shield swap on the 'R'. Calipers finally arrived at NAPA from the US. On first look over they are typical re-built units. These came with the refurbished 302mm caliper brackets which I needed.

The calipers themselves are going into the 'stash' as the current ones are still good. I will seal them in bags with some desiccant bags to try to prevent rusting in storage and degradation of the rubber parts.

I looked the calipers and bracket over and would say this. The slider pins are typical cheap aftermarket items and will be returned with the cores. I'll keep the still good OE parts.

Pistons look like new steel items, but hard to tell how they will last. I would call them 'builder grade' parts, and not high end. Rubber caliper slider covers are the typical aftermarket cheap rubber units with plastic caps. They are functional but not sure how they will hold up. I do have some good OE items in the stash so may swap them over in the future if/when I need to install the calipers.

The brake pad retainer looks fairly 'beefy' so add those to the stash. I don't normally return those with the cores. Should you?

The parts look like the usual cleaned and painted re-built items. Not sure if the coating is powder coating or paint of some sort. I guess use will tell on that point. I will see how the brackets hold up next year. If they start to rust I will remove and paint them again. RH caliper shown below. LH has a '1' on the end of the part number instead of the '2'.

New Volvo dust shields are now prepped for paint and one side has had 2 coats of POR-15. Just have to do the other side now and then I'm ready for the install!

We currently have blowing snow and projected to be at -33 to -35C this afternoon and overnight!

Thoughts are going out for all those who recently were impacted by weather events. Heard they had 100 mph+ winds in the UK last week causing a fair amount of damage.

Stay warm and safe out there!

That caliper looks identical to the Cardone ones I got from FCP for Geronimo. Same box (but with NAPA/Cardone label), white plastic tag with metal wire, red fitting cap, black retained bleeder cap (which gets in the way). I think mine are simply painted. I didn't see rust breaking through like on two of the four Volvo brand ones I bought, but those were powder and clear coated.

For rust prevention, I had my new calipers professionally stripped of coating in rust in a chemical bath, sand blasted, powder coated, and clear coated. The Volvo calipers were so terribly coated with rust breaking through and they have been for the last six or seven calipers I've bought, all failing due to rust. I'm trying the break that cycle.

Are you going to pay the core charge to not return your still good calipers and presumably bad brackets? If the brackets are the right shape but just rusty, consider professional stripping, blasting, and coating so you know they're perfect. May require filing the pad ear grooves first to ensure there flat.

I have a thread on this powder coating project.

Finally let go of the S70 today. Traded it for another Subaru... that's the second one I've acquired in the past week
It went to a Volvo enthusiast who has an XC90 V8, and has had many other Volvos. I'm more than happy to see it go to a good home where it will live on as a daily driver, exactly as it should! I'm not one to get sentimental about cars, but I hate seeing good cars like these wasted.
