Couch moving day. Moved a really nice Ethan Allen 8 footer into living room and moved a 7 foot leather recliner into my office breezeway. Damn near Killed me but they both look gorgeous on their new homes. Also got the treadmill up and running. Spent two hours looking for my soldering iron , then gave up and fixed the wires with a stove ignitor. Couldn’t find wire either so I destranded thick gauge.
Did a full annual cleaning of office and eliminated all loose paper finally.

Do these steel pipe corner fittings have any value or demand? Are they still a standard shape you can buy? I had an old electric house boiler supported by a table made with these corner fittings (1947). I can just toss them in the steel recycle bin.

I think those pipe fittings are primarily useful for pipe stair and walkway railings. They would not have good internal flow for fluids. I have seen these used on old railings. They might be of interest for someone making vintage look items.
If mine, I would throw them in my bucket of misc. pipe fittings.

Thanks. I just remembered we have a building salvage store here, I'll drop them off next time I'm there.

Wait so you’re saying these pipes and fittings were not made for normal pipe duty, but were made to be railings and otherwise physical supports?

If so, that’s fascinating to me. I’ve always noticed these used for railings. I’d guess generally 1930s-1960s based on the homes I’ve seen it used on. I always assumed they were the cheapest, most available option because of their primary role as pipe.

Yes, special fittings for pipe railing. There was a time when cast iron fittings were cheap, pipe workers were cheap, and railings could be made to fit any space. Just cut and thread the pipe as required.
Today these railings are likely to be welded. My understanding is general welding became more common after about 1920's and especially after WWII. The last of the steam locomotives built in the 1940's were riveted boilers, not welded.

Amazing a riveted boiler could hold that kind of pressure! How was the overlapping seam sealed?

You have stumped me. I don't know if it was just metal to metal contact or if some high temperature sealer was used.
I do know that for the 165 PSI boiler on the local museum steam locomotive built in 1910, there are 3 rows of giant rivets at each seam. Plate thickness is about 0.375 inch and diameter of boiler is about 6 feet.
The 1940's steam locomotive were about 300 PSI.

Was single digit highs last week so finally adjusted valves on my gravel bike. Not too bad of a job pulling camshafts to adjust shims.
