Pulled a couple of corecalipers off Jane Bond and a decent set of front brake pads destined for a broke customer. Maybe harvest tie rods and LCA for Geronimo?

" Why did you have the engine rebuilt? May I ask how did you justify the cost ? "

Well if it was a rusty, N/A, p.o.s. from east coast salty roads, I wouldn't do it. :)

But as an example:
20+ years ago I bought my Jeep Cherokee in much the same way. Bought it from the original owner. Well taken care of, garage kept AZ car. Rust free obviously. Had just what I was looking for - 4L H.O. 6cyl w/ 5 speed manual. Sport package
( tach etc ) but manual windows and door locks.
In the first 2 or 3 years of ownership I dumped apx 4k into it. No failures, just staying ahead of problems when I had the $$ to do so.
At this point I have gone through the entire car - engine, trans & clutch, rear end, all accessories, body & paint, and interior.
Outlaid apx 11k over 20+ years inc purchase price. Now just shy of 400k miles ! The car has NEVER let me down. Easily the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Has started everyday without fail. Even now I can take it on a 1000 mile trip with no concerns at all. With a little TLC I'd drive it across the country. Looks and drives great. In fact I get people every 2 - 3 months wanting to buy it from me. So theoretically I could sell it and get about $4 - 5k back on my long term investment, bringing my total cost for more than 20 years of use down to $5k or less. Do the math.

Do I think that I will fair as well with the Volvo ? Maybe not, but it will be close. And a lot of turbo fun in the meantime. :D

I'm sure your husky will do its best to make up for that!

Hey! I’ve got a pair of those…..

Slipped out to Caitlin’s at 1630, just light enough to swap in two TYC headlights and then have enough dark to align them

Here's hoping you get to 400k in the Volvo as well. Perhaps my question should have read: What necessitated the engine rebuild? Burning oil, blown head gasket, loss of compression, broken timing belt, etc?

I'm amazed that a shop would do such extensive work instead of telling you to scrap it and buy a newer car. I hate the notion that cars are disposable and feel that any reasonable problems can be repaired (except rust). Yet removing and rebuilding an engine seems like impossible sorcery to me, so I might be forced to scrap a car instead of doing a rebuild.

I ask all this to continually learn more about car maintenance. The 860R project by Nevada1906 showed in great detail how the engine is not magic, just more parts. Maybe I will tear into my engine to address its moderate oil consumption.

Hey FireFox - I don't know if you remember but I was having blow-by problems due to low compression in two cylinders. Not terrible, but a PITA to continually drain the catch can. And a waste of oil when doing so. But more than that, it irritated me that none of my other work on the car would ever be fully appreciated with the engine as it was. The sad part is that it was all avoidable if the PO had kept up on the maintenance. But with her being 90, I can't really fault her.

This is the first FWD engine I have pulled. Done a few " normal " ones in the past. Not as easy as my Jeep, or MGB, or BMW but way easier than removing the engine out of my van. I would say that it's not that bad to do overall. I had already done the engine mounts and removed intake and exhaust before, so it seemed like it wouldn't be too much more work to remove the engine at that point. Once you get stuff taken off, it starts to look way less formidable.

You seem to be as mechanical as the rest of us, so I'm sure you wouldn't have any problem if you wanted to remove / install an engine. I would say that a covered area ( garage ) makes it a way more enjoyable endeavor. No fun working in the cold !

I got a new set of headlight assemblies for the XC90, which really spiffs up the front end. I had hoped to get them before our first family ski trip, but of course only one arrived in time. :)

Evita conquered 7 inches of snow in Suffolk this morning. Abby was the only one who made it in.

I had missed that, thanks for the recap. Glad to hear you got that huge job completed. Sounds like you gave the car a whole new life. Good luck with the installation.
